During the early 90s, Sonic The Hedgehog was one of the most marketable and popular characters around. And in 1993, with the much anticipated release of Sonic 3 coming up the following year, Sonic hype was at an all time high. In fact, Sonic was so popular that he was given a spot among the top choice characters at the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! However, the Sonic balloon has a pretty interesting history with the parade, as he has made many appearances throughout the years, and has become pretty famous, or, perhaps infamous with fans of the parade. So, let's talk about it!

Music:
1. Spinball Theme - Virtual Sonic
2. Balloon Park - Sonic The Hedgehog 3
3. Green Grove Zone Act 1 - Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn)
4. Rusty Ruins Zone Act 1 - Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn)
5. Splash Hill Zone (Medley) - Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
6. Return to the Toxic Caves - Virtual Sonic

  • UPDATE: After eight years since being retired, the Sonic balloon will officially make a grand return for the 95th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2021, in conjunction with the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Haha...I was at the 2012 parade and when Sonic came by I was so happy, screaming to my mom and everything. :3

Damn, Eggman has been going with his plans to stop Sonic all wrong, all he needed to do is to cover every zone with lamp posts
  • Kid (before accident) : I WANT A SEGA GENESIS ! Kid : (after accident) I Want A Super Nintendo Now.
  • "I absolutely despise sonic and everything he represents." "Why?" "His balloon popped and knocked over a child and police officer."
  • "that's why they call him Sonic 3D Blast" oh so that's his full name!
  • @UltimaKeyMaster
You know there's some really sick irony in lampposts being that balloon's worst enemy, given they usually RESPAWN him. Also I'll be honest, given 2011 was meant to promote Sonic Generations, what the hell was Splash Hill doing as the theme when that song is the only existence Sonic 4 even has in Generations? I don't really think too many kid Sonic fans were going to know of it too well when it was digital only in the mid-7th gen. I guess someone just kinda picked a theme out of a hat and never bothered changing it. I mean...come on, Modern Sonic's flying through a city use Escape From the City! No I don't care it's the wrong coastline. =P

Update: The Sonic balloon from 2011-2013 reappeared in 2021 for the 30th anniversary. Important announcements include mentioning Colors Ultimate while playing the Colors orchestral title screen.
  • @nicolle2126
Maybe Sonic thought the post was a checkpoint
  • @kekameme
If they redesign the balloon, they should make it where Tails, while flying is carrying Sonic! Good idea, right?
  • I think Mario making the parade with Cappy on the Odyssey would be perfect!

2:54 If the Sonic balloon hit a police officer Doesn't that mean Sonic is officially a wanted criminal?
  • THIS VIDEO IS PROOF THAT SONIC'S WEAKNESS AIN'T WATER. IT'S STREETLIGHTS. Also, this was uploaded on my Birthday. <3.

I wonder what happened to the old balloon. Lots of old balloons and floats are put into storage, could that have happened to sonic?
