This one affected Craig badly. Reminds us that although time allows existence, it's at the same time one mean son of a bitch.

Craig really bears his soul there at the end of the second interview when he talks about running. He clearly sees a kindred spirit and is smitten with her, but because of the age difference and inappropriateness of it, plays it off as fatherly concern. For a girl of her age and generation, she is so smart, articulate, and an amazing personality, it's hard not to smitten with her.

SW: "You got great socks" Craig: "They're tights." SW: "Long johns or tights?" Craig: "They're tights. I wear them for skiing." SW: "Skiing and talk shows." Craig: "I don't know - things go downhill pretty fast around here." His throwaway jokes are better than anything I've ever come up with.

I get the sense Craig really saw elements of himself in Shailene and seemed to be trying to share his wisdom and warn her about the industry, I think this is one of my favourite of his interviews.
  • @kejorafall
i think this is the most time craig being his true self, not trying to be funny, not trying flirty, just his real self
  • Craig sensed her innocence and youth and as sympatico as they are, instinctively dropped into a protective mentor role, rather than being his usual flirtatious self. Those sorts of instincts are part of what made him amazing. I miss this show...

If she was his daughter, he would be extremely proud of her. That's the vibe I got with this interview.

That "it goes downhill" retort was pure genius...and got almost no response. My god, the man is untouchable by today's standards. Seriously. He most definitely feels a very clear connection with her in these interviews, too...he lets his guard down a few times and stops worrying about being funny. What an excellent human being Craig is.

Two things about this guest. 1) he never flirted. No creepy "it puts the lotion in the basket". Nothing. Pretty cool. 2) everything he said in the second interview about pure artists losing themselves and being non-snooty is exactly how he was being. One of the purest interviews he's done.
  • @e4tango347
"I envy all artists who lose themselves in the art." Amen to that, Craigy!
  • @PS-rr2jt
“I ran so I could feel completely exhausted, so now I can’t panic.” Wow! That was an unexpected, rare look into Craig’s psyche, also completely relatable.
  • @PurushaDesa
" Are you the therapist or am I the therapist? " " We can take turns. " That was a real moment right there. She is good people.
  • @eiebsrebla
20:37 The fact he replied with 'Hmm' to that sentence and not with 'I bet you do' perfectly shows he's holding back, respect
  • @Nnnuvolari
29:10 "I'm completely exhausted so now I can't panic"...that's the confession of a true existentialist.
  • @flarkityt
I figured it out! Shailene is radiantly comfortable in her own skin, with who she is.

I gotta say, I'm from Brazil and unfortunately we don't have american talk shows around here, but I'm watching a lot of them on youtube and Craig is by far the most amazing host I've ever seen. That's how a talk show should be!
  • She officially entered one of the best guests ever territory when she pulled out the matching smoking pipe. Also, hearing Craig talk about running was really interesting. As a fellow runner myself, I really agree with him about the running as a search for grace and just exhausting your body to the breaking point. It doesn't feel great at first, in fact as he says it is really painful... actual pain during the hard parts, but then you endure it and your body recovers and like she said, you feel as if you have really accomplished something.
  • I love this interview. Craig respects her as an intellectual equal, and at the end of their second interview he truly shares something personal with her. I think maybe he senses the peril she is in by her tightrope walk with success and wishes her to avoid the same evils that he went through. Shailene is a lovely, amazingly perceptive human.
  • @Chewyness
I feel like Craig sees Sailene as like his daughter all grown up like what she would be like when she grew up and the intelligence she shows now and what she would be like in her future. He doesn’t flirt or talk dirty to Sailene he’s just genuinely interested in her and her future
  • @hamedbadri6584
This is the most touching of Craig interviews I've seen to this moment. And also the lady, she connects with the genuine side of you. She is so lovely and respectable.

7:15 It's so beautiful what Craig does here. I have seen lots of his interviews and he is genuine, down to Earth, but, this, this is something else. He is really giving from his heart advice for an young talented person. You can tell he is really concerned. I never saw that before anywhere. He does not need to do that, just crack jokes, but, wow, what an amazing human being. And she felt his love, his concern, his feelings... Around 11:00 he confirms what I just said.
