As he prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday, an uncharacteristically reflective Paul Hogan looks back over his remarkable life and career.
In the first of two episodes, the actor and comedian talks about his working-class background, sudden fame in his early 30s, his relationship with John “Strop” Cornell and the genesis of Crocodile Dundee, one of the most successful independent films ever made.
Paul's son Todd, speaking publicly for the first time, talks movingly of the disruptions the family faced as their father became a star, virtually overnight.

Being an American, I feel cheated that I didn't get to see Paul Hogan until Crocodile Dundee. I always wondered about him and his life, being genuinely funny in such a natural manner. Thank you for this.

"That's not a knife - this is a knife" is one of those iconic lines that will live on forever (like "You're gonna need a bigger boat", and "make my day").

Australian legend. "That's not a knife..... that's a knife," Handsome, charismatic maverick who's unforgettable. Wish him good health and peace. Digress : RIP, Steve Irwin. Another enigmatic larger-than-life Australian who touched the world with his passion for wild-life.

Best thing about this guy is the way he still embraces the character that made him instead of crying about being typecasted

Paul and his son were on a flight with me from LA to Sydney 6 years ago. I didn't get to talk to him since he was on the upper deck but I was thrilled to see him. If not for him and Crocodile Dundee, I probably wouldn't be visiting Australia in the first place!

When I was in Australia in the 1970s new friends exposed me to Paul Hogan's TV show. I still have never laughed so hard in my life. Not long after my return home Crocodile Dundee hit the big screen. I saw it in a packed theater and, because I knew the "lingo" and culture, more than once busted out laughing only to discover I was the only one. I was picking up on things the rest of the now laughing & looking at me audience hadn't. Hang in there Hoges & a good on ya mate for all of the joy & laughter you've brought the world.

"Sort of mum's fourth child." She summed it up perfectly. This trait was key to Paul's success. I'm glad he's still with us and can celebrate Christmas for another year with his family. I love the Aussie humor. Totally unique in its contribution to the world's humor to soften the blows of life.

Despite getting old myself... it makes it hard to see Legends like Hoges getting older. Such a beautiful man, honest and well centered. I thank him for my laughs and will Love him forever :)

Wow, I've always wondered about him... I still have Crocodile Dundee movies on VHS! Man, I'd love to see his show. The excerpts that I've seen are funny and I like it. I am happy to see him at this time in his life. Awesome Paul! Thank you.

  • So ...Paul Hogan actually had/started the first reality TV show! He was a big part of my childhood and as an American he made me LOVE Australians!!
  • Great to see a guy as humble as he is and realizes how lucky he is as well.

In the UK Paul was so different, so original and so damn funny. And came across as such a normal genuine bloke, we love him as much as the Aussies do !

What a great Australian. I remember watching him on television when I was a kid and laughing my head off. There will never be another Paul Hogan
  • Since the 70's every Aussie male has the World over been defined by Paul Hogan. He is Australia, and fantastically so.
  • @johntripp5159
Fantastic memories. I had the good fortune to come to Aus in 1964, my mother is a Melbourne girl so it was an invitation to a different world having been raised in Canada. So these guys on the television and the very friendly people of sydney burned a nice on my brain. Cheers Sydney what a nice town.
  • @jmgnish
Loved his show in the 70's. Great ambassador for Australia and a truly funny guy. It seems the most appealing celebs are always the ones who don't lose sight of humility and are relatable as honest, down to earth people. So glad Delvene was a big part of this. Same is true for her. Good people.
