Published 2021-08-24
George Saunders, the recipient of a 2006 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (“Genius Grant” Award), is the author of a novel, four collections of short stories, a novella, a book of essays, and an award-winning children’s book. His long-awaited novel, "Lincoln in the Bardo," was published in 2017; which Colson Whitehead noted as: “A luminous feat of generosity and humanism.” His most recent book is the "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain" (Penguin Random House, 2021), which offers a literary masterclass on what makes great stories work, how to become both a better writer and reader, and what they can tell us about how to live. In 2017, Saunders won the Man Booker Prize for his novel "Lincoln in the Bardo." His collection, "Tenth of December" (Random House, 2013), was a finalist for the National Book Award, and winner of the 2014 Story Prize for short fiction and the 2014 Folio Prize, which celebrates the best fiction of our time.

First read Saunders in 2005 and my first reaction was: wow, you can write crazy stuff?

So much to love about this interview - so good that it really focusses on the act of writing - takeaway for me was 'the theme emerges from the restraint' - he doesn't know what it is for a while, then it (the theme reveals itself. Thank you.
  • So glad to listen to an interview with George Saunders talking about the craft and other things as well. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Probably it's a stupid thing to say but I am so grateful to Mr.Saunders for his deep understanding of Russian and slavic culture during these hard times for our country, fighing ignorance and hypocrisy, for me Russia and Ukraine both still remain parts of the Soviet union love and peace
