Estates in Singapore that were once Graveyards

Singapore is an island that has the most graveyards in the world. This is because of its strategic location in South East Asia that has made it an attractive hub for maritime navigators from all over the world to stopover and trade and eventually called this island, home. My quest to look for graves is to get a better understanding the diversity of the ancient societies here in Singapore which has made this island unique. Almost 90% of the graves of these early settlers have been exhumed to make way for commercial and residential development. Some people believe that houses built on graves bring about prosperity and luck. While others try to avoid living on them, fearing the spirits will affect their lives. Nevertheless, I can confidently say that the entire island were covered with graves. This evidently shows that Singapore has all time been a vibrant entrepot to the world. May the souls of our forefathers rest in peace. Without them, there is no prosperous Singapore today.

I wonder if the National Archives of Singapore is recognising your work. They should be supporting your exellent work. I'm serious. You deserve the recognitions of this and other research you had done in such a scale. Well done. Keep going! 👍👍👍

Thank you for compiling these invaluable knowledge on the past graves and what the places are today. When there are chills down our spines when we walk through these places at night, we know why. We are more respectful of places in Singapore, not just for the the present buildings and residence but also, the people of the past, who were once burried here. May they rest in peace....

Awesome video bro. Thanks for tough research gone into this work. 3:19 This grave site is on a hill at Holland Road beside HDB blocks 11, 12 & 13. You can see Holland Village in this photo. I used to slide down this hill slope with cardboard boxes in 80's, of cuz the cemetery was gone by then. It was a park the last time I was there many many years ago.

seems everywhere is haunted hahaha, thanks for uploading this informative video, I had visited Bidadari at Upper Serangoon years back for a photoshoot, unfortunately it's all flats now. Really liked the place as it was quiet, tranquil, peaceful and the gravestones and stone statues were beautiful. It felt like overseas.

Great work abang! Keep them coming. Thanks for sharing!
  • My olde hood Lengkok Bahru was also a cemetery. There were like 2 instances when digging works were done & human remains were uncovered. When I moved into the area at about 4 years old, the place was a Chinese cemetery the whole stretch where the Redhill MRT station is now.
