Black Gumbo shares our suburban, backyard, sustainable gardening efforts. We work a small-scale teaching garden, much like the typical Zone 9a backyard garden and raised beds, the kind of gardening accessible to all. We also grow lots of fruit and berries. We tend to take the slice of life approach and hope you will enjoy our family, our dog, our cooking, our adventures, and occasionally some commentary and advice. We love family, joy and friendship, and we invite you to enjoy these things with us!

Keep on keepin' on, Scott. You're doing the Lord's work.👍

You're a legend Scott. Don't feel bad about time out from the garden or from YouTube. Thanks for all the inspiration. I've been growing food for two years because of your channel. (Tom from Ireland)

Totally get the "not quite the way you wanted it to." Now we just roll with it. And sometimes it works out for the best. Thanks for your time once again. It's greatly appreciated.

The garden looks like it’s happy man. 👍🏻

Scott, your garden is a real representative of so many others' gardens. Sometimes you just can't get to everything to make a tidy garden, but it still produces. More and more, I have been interplanting flowers with my vegetables to draw the pollinators to my garden . It's a WIN/WIN for the insects and for us to enjoy the color. Always enjoy your videos!

Good morning from Texas. So glad to have a video from you.

I really enjoy watching your channel! I love your “how to” videos and It is very pleasant to listen to your commentaries. Seeing a serious home gardener deal with the reality of life creating deviations in their plans is wonderful. That’s one of the difficulties we need to deal with and can be so discouraging. Gardening is not about perfection but learning to roll with whatever happens to get the best harvest we can under the circumstances. Your common sense approach is beneficial to all of us! Thank you for your openness in sharing your experiences so we all can benefit.

What a beautiful little lizzard on your plant.

I just want to say thank you for your honesty and acknowledging that life happens. I needed to hear that 🙏

Bless your garden soul Scott and your garden family!

Phoebe seemed jealous that you were sweet talking that anole. I love my anoles out back. Never have bug issues in my containers. Between the birds and the anoles the bugs don't stand a chance. My peppers that I overwintered are doing great. One bell plant has 8 or 9 peppers growing away. My lunchbox pepper plants are being very virulent. Most plants have 9 or 10 peppers. My new pepper plants are blooming and starting fruit. I have bush beans going in pots. Okra plants are knee high and starting to bloom. Basil, spearmint, and parsley going good and should have a mess in a week or two. Oh... my blueberries I planted this spring brought fruit. Already had a handful and they are yummy. Love this time of year. So much promise from so much work. I have so many flowers going nuts too. So exciting. Glad to see your garden Scott. I've missed you and (of course) Pheobe (I'm in the low country of South Carolina for those wondering)

Fire, FIRE, FIRE!!!! Where is the fire?!?! Fire!

One of may favorite things to do is wander around my pepper garden at night with a flashlight and find all the lizards hunkered down for the night. Tried rescuing one in one of my rain barrels last night. Hope it made it. Thanks for the tour!

The garden looks great. I love the idea of letting the tomatoes sprawl. Thanks for sharing. 🤗
-
So looking forward to your cooking videos

Scott Head, Your gardens look great as always. I started letting my Tomatoes sprawl last year, I used to buy those expensive cages every year, I tried the string trellis one year, I found that the tomatoes do better for me when they sprawl just like you said. I love you great down to earth approach to gardening. Thanks for all you awesome videos, Hoping for a quick resolution to any issues in your life, we all have you in our thought and prayers.

For the fig trees....try setting up some mirrors to add/introduce more light to the trees. There's some great aesthetics such as mirror ornamentals hanging from the limbs. But I'd suggest mirrors hanging on your fence to redirect the light. It may add just enough for fruiting.
