S2 E3 Thanks for the Memory

Okay its one of the biggies today, ‘Thanks for the Memory. Lots and lots of cool sci fi ideas in here, lots of character background, lots of confusing cannon, so plenty to discuss!

Opening gag is the run out of shake and vac. Before we get an ‘additional, additional’ last week we funda planet with a breathable atmosphere
On the planet we see the deathday party, with the full crew including Holly and skutters partying. The crew are unusually nice to rimmer, possibly happy for the excuse for a party.
First and only time seeing the hologram projection cage, not required in other episodes. Rob Grant has said that it was just too limiting for stories, hence subsequent episodes like Backwards not requiring it.
Famously, Craig Charles’ son jack was being delivered during filming, with the crew rushing to complete filming of all craigs parts before he rushed off in a car to the hospital to arrive 20 mins late for the birth
The filming location was a Welsh quarry, withminiture shots blended in, very well it must be said
We again see the mobile version of holly first seen in the previous episode better than life.
Lister is playing, or mime playing his red explorer copy guitar, which we saw the back of in better than life
Rimmer is drinking invisible holo drinks, similar to how he drank invisible shots in ME2
Lister shows the spanner cake he made for Rimmer and we get the ‘it's lucky he wasn't a gynaecologist’ joke. It's also good to see that the Chefs exam training Lister undertook in ‘balance of power’ didn't all go to waste!
In the deleted scenes theres extra dialogue of rimmer talking about serving at the officers ball… before being sexually abused by the officers, which he sounds pretty darn pleased about as it was the first rung on the ladder to jonging the ridiculous sounding space masons.
Eventually the boys hed back to the dwarf in a blue midget, which lister drunkenly drives… badly
The Remastered version has a few added sound effects, as well as the complete swap of Blue Midget for the CGI version seen in series 8. Theres even some cgi footage of the walking blue midget staggering around drunk before taking off, which tbh is kinda funny… but i still prefer the OG Blue Midget!
In the deleted scene there's a sequence of the boys struggling back to the bunk room, with Rimmer so holo drunk that he’s actually crawling along the floor!
In the bunk room we get a legendary, classic Rimmer and Lister scene, with Lister first sharing his drunken food delight, before the conversion leads to Rimmer talking about how Lister is so much more liked than himself.
Finally we get the fantastic revelation that Rimmer only made love once, to Yvonne Mcgrudder, for 12 mins, including the time it took to eat the pizza! We met an artificial reality version of Yvonne in the previous episode ‘better than life’.
In the later Series 3 episode Marooned, Rimmer would instead talk about his first time as being in the back of his brother's Bently convertible, presumably on a planet rather than Red Dwarf. Although, Rimmer is very sketchy on details, being more interested in the car, so that may have been his first time making out rather than actually making love.
Rimmer sings his ‘I’m a little lamb’ song and eventually goes to bed sad and depressed about having prioritised his career over his personal life. While Dave does a little more of the puzzle before leaving the bunk room.
We get a ship fly by followed by Rimmer jumping out of bed and to his horror, remembering the embarrassing drunken conversation. - knowing that this occurred after the memory wipe, its funny that they never deleted the drunk conversation as well.
Lister wakes up in agony as his foots in plaster
The jigsaw has been completed
Hollys star chart has been messed around with
The Cats foot is also broken

Oh, Rimmer was lying his head off about the girl. Not about the Bentley, but definitely the girl.

    Nice breakdown, duke.

Scruffy, mellow Rimmer is kinda great. 😊

Really enjoyed the video as always, def a top 10 ep for me I think! Or thereabouts. It's a great one, but there's so many great RD eps... :) Again learned a lot about details and things I never noticed before or had no idea about! And Ed Bye's reaction to the fan theory is hilarious.

15:42 This is one good reason why it was a bad move to replace the original Red Dwarf exterior with a new redesign in the remastered version. Especially as there's a lot of moments in the remastered where the original ship can still be seen. Like when Lister lays the last piece of the jigsaw here, which obviously couldn't transition into the remastered end credits. And also on those monitors in the hologram simulation suite scene. I guess they didn't have the budget or technology back then to digitally replace the original jigsaw so it showed the redesigned ship.

I'd say the DNA machine restored Lister from a Chicken with a new Appendix.
  • Guess Cat kept switching mirror mode on and off while watching the replay footage.

If they did fall out about the way rimmed was acting like Lister. Does that mean Craig acts like Lister in real life.

Hear I am trying to map the star charts and some Git's been fiddling with it..😅 always get me.

Another YouTuber has talked about comparing Clues and Thanks For The Memory. I’ve never got into Star Trek and thought it was interesting.

Dancing? I seen people on fire move better than that 😂 also I’ve always fancied a triple fried egg sandwich with chilli sauce and chutney but never been brave enough 😂 keep up the good work buddy (low key cannot wait for statis leak)

I never took it as a 2nd time around at the end, it was meant to be time #1, they just had their legs broken, just got back to the ship from the first visit to bury it. The episode ends in a flashback.
  • I swear Star trek TNG had a very similar episode were Data has to wipe all the crews memories as a planet they visited had a civilization that did not want to interact or be known to others si the crew keep finding things clearly showing they have some how missed a couple of days aa Data has changed the ships clocks and sensor information they end up doing it again and are successfull not sure what came firs RD or ST it's around the same time late 80s .
