Mastering this game is awesome. When I first started I was like scared to do any of the silly tricks out of fear of falling, but once you get it you can go stupid. The "you don't have a jump button" tagline becomes less and less true, because you have a pretty effective double jump in this game, it just takes like 4 commands to use.

hi frootman! The large number of gears you were checking in the top left of the pause menu is the total amount of gears you have vs. the total amount needed to unlock the next level (it seems).
You can also see this number in the world map, above the minimap as well.
The actual amount of gears PER level can be seen on the right side of the pause menu, in the "minimap" (or in the top left of in-game hud; the "ok" hand means you've collected all the gears).
