Here's three shots from The Lion King showing my first rough pass compared to my tie down pass. In the first two shots Simba is animated by the brilliant Ruben Aquino. You can see that my first sketches are really scribbly.

This is proof that with enough practice that you can create anything. If you feel down about your work, just know that if you keep creating and practicing you can make stuff just like this.

I have a serious appreciation for animators who share their rough pass. It really shows that it was all done with a pencil.

Hey James Baxter, I always wondering how did you able to animate perspective shots or going around 360 shot in your animations? They feel like Richard Williams perspective animation or 3D hand drawn animation, how you able to animate those shots?

  • It's amazing how three-dimensional the Simba/Scar take was given it's purely 2-D.

The last 3d lion one just absolutely blows my mind, as an animator myself it hurts my brain thinking about the level of skill that would require

Five Year old me "I like it" Thirteen Year Old Me "I love the animation" Eighteen Year Old Me: "This is a real classic!" Twenty Year Old Me "I didn't know this film was a year older than me?" Twentyfour Year Old Me "Ah yes....this animation is a fine vintage indeed. From the Renaissance Era, 1994 was a good year."
