  • I think the myth behind the sawed off having more power is that you always see them being used at literal point blank range in films and games so they’re obviously going to look more devastating
  • @deathangelo82
Sawed offs became popular because they were easier to conceal. If you were going to be in an area where you needed a lot of firepower, you would be in close enough range for the sawed off barrel to be effective.

19:06 had me crackin up, "my heart is tellin me super goose", immediate cut to a full on execution
  • @funnyguy3D
you know they make these things called gloves, scott.

I think the point of the sawed-off shotgun in movies is to be more powerful than a handgun while still being compact. Which it sure would be. Also, shortening the weapon makes it easier to conceal and carry. Think Kyle Reece in the Terminator. Also, in close quarters combat, a shorter weapon would be easier to handle, move around and aim. Still, people wouldn't fly back like they do in the movies. Mythbusters did an entire episode on this.

Longer barrel will always give you a tighter group and better velocity meaning more "power", to a certain extent. Edit : Of course I know SBS are 100x cooler I was simply sharing my thoughts

  • Ever since I was young, I was told the sawed off is only to get a bigger spread at close range.
That's why the coachman riding "shotgun" usually had a sawed off for when any bandits tried to actually board the coach, while in motion, it gave them more chance of hitting them and then they carried Colt revolvers for backup.

At 11:01 it is possible to see that the 9th pellet missed just beside the zombie's left arm, playing at 0,25x speed helps to see it. This is normal with buckshot that has 9 pellets in it. Reason is that the first two pellets in the shell are a pair and the 3rd & 4th pellet form a similar pair but at a 90 degree different rotation and this symmetrical pattern continues until the 8th pellet... put a ninth one and it breaks the pattern. That makes the 9th pellet to shoot off from the main group.

Hey Scott, great content as always! From what I've been reading lately it seems as though much like a rifle, with shotguns barrel length has almost nothing to do with spread and is almost entirely controlled by the choke, barrel length only adds velocity and balance for swing through when hunting or shooting clays. In theory the sawed off should have more 'knock back power' due to the larger impact area as you mentioned, as long as its energy was high enough from the lower velocity, it would have been cool to see if that effect was intensified with something like #8 birdshot to evenly spread the impact energy even more. Could be a fun video idea to rig something to test knock back power over penetration and maybe even include some different chokes for 12g? This could also be a fun comparison for the elephant guns. Keep up the amazing videos!

I think another important note to the origin of this is is how video games handle balance. A sawn-off is gonna be less accurate and have the player push closer, but will deal extreme damage as a trade-off. Higher risk higher reward.
  • Super Goose 10 sounds like a bad, short lived but fondly remembered Saturday morning cartoon.
  • @webstella
Thanks for the comparison. Now I will have something to compare my Turkish 14" pump with chokes and raptor grip to.
  • @Jack_Mehoff
Scott's arms flailing running away in the intro 🤣 first guntube intro I've laughed out loud at in a while
  • What do you think? Are sawed off shotguns more powerful? I hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
  • @preston.t.king.
The super goose 10 gauge was very impressive. And it's like you said, the sawed off looks cooler, but the 10 gauge is devastating

I live in Tennessee and on this day, it was 9 degrees
