Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of you all time. It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations where artists give us exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences about their biggest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we have something very special for you. I was extremely fortunate to sit down for an in-depth interview with rock and roll hall of famer and cowriter, producer and guitarist with Tom Petty and the heartbreakers and the lead singer of his own band the dirty knobs the great Mike Campbell. One day Mike wrote a song that he felt was maybe the best song he’d ever written. He was elated to show it to Tom Petty for the Heartbreakers new album Southern accents that they were working on with mega producer Jimmy Iovine. He was shocked with both Tom and Jimmy shot the song down. They didn’t think it worked for their album. They didn’t hear it. Mike was pretty much devastated… Jimmy mentioned to Mike that the song might work for another legendary singer who was working on his sophomore solo offering. So let me set that up:

After the Eagles broke up in 1980 Don Henley went solo. He released I Cant Stand Still in late 81 pushed forward by his brilliant hit Dirty Laundry. As He prepared to release his second album Building The Perfect Beast he was looking for a killer song. So the next day Jimmy set up a meeting between Mike Campbell and Don Henley. Mike played Don his song and to his surprise, Don seemed to have the same reaction Tom Petty had days before…He was indifferent to it. Don Henley left Mike’s house and once again Mike was perplexed. Was he losing his musical intuition? Well about an hour later, Mike’s phone rang… Remember this was in the early 80s no cell phones. So Mike picked up… it was Don Henley he said Mike I think I just wrote the best song of my career! Get the whole story from my interview with Mike Next.

Poll: Who is your pick for the MOST UNDER APPRECIATED Guitarist of the rock era?
  • Honestly, I didn't know that Mike Campbell wrote the music for Boys of Summer, and Heart of The Matter, but I sure am glad he did. They are both great songs, and Henley had so much talent with the lyrics.
  • I was 15years old at the time and my father was 35. It was the first time our music had really intersected. I fell in love with Dons lyrics and emotion and my Father appreciated his hero from his favourite band The Eagles. My dad has dementia now but we still go for drives and listen to all of Dons stuff and we still bond to this day. Wish I had a DeLorean . Love from Australia 🙏👍
  • No matter who you are interviewing, when I hear them say, "Boy! You've done your homework!" it just shows you are the best. No one else can compete with your knowledge!!!!
  • @christineml1476
I can't imagine Tom singing it - in hindsight it was clearly, and unknowingly, written for Don Henley's voice.

When I was 20, I had started to date my best friend. I had a lot going on at the time, and we were struggling. We had broken up, and worse, I felt like I was losing my best friend. We were both at a mutual friend's house, and Heart of the Matter came on the radio. I was singing it under my breath, and getting a little misty-eyed when I looked up, and our eyes met. To make a long story short, we've been married for 28 years now.

Out on the road today I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac A little voice inside my head said "Don't look back, you can never look back" One of the greatest song lyrics of all time.
  • Henley was one of my favorite solo acts in that time period. Sunset Grill, All She Wants To Do Is Dance (great video), Dirty Laundry, and of course Boys of Summer. All classics.
  • @matthew58ify
‘’You keep carryin’ that anger, it’ll eat you up inside”…..most profound line ever written. I’ve quoted it to friends a thousand times when they were angry at someone for some stupid reason.

What a year! What a song! What a decade! Let's go back and do it all over again! Who's with me?
  • @fredgroenke2586
The Heart of the Matter and The End of the Innocence are 2 of my favorite DH songs. Those songs carried me through a rough time in my life. It’s like Henley knew what I needed at that time.
  • @dorklyasmr6017
Mike Campbell is one of the greatest yet most unheralded guitarists of the entire rock era.
  • Heart of the matter means a lot to me now as I'm taking care of my Dad. Lot of forgiveness I owe to him and to myself. Thanks Professor ❤️
  • @thebackyardbear
Not only do I remember Pierce Brosnan as Remington Steele, I remember when Bruce Willis was on Moonlighting, Tom Hanks was a Busom Buddy, and watched Jimmy Kimmel chug beer and do black face on the Man Show.
  • @jeffbrown321
When he's talking he sounds so much like Tom... and yea Boys of Summer and Heart of the Matter are both fantastic songs. Mike always plays just what the song requires. "I thought I knew what love was... what did I know" rings so true for me right now
  • I hear Boys of Summer on radio several times a week, it never seems to get old.
  • @InspiredJJ
Mike is the most unknown best artist. He is like a Toyota, not given enough credit and so solid.
  • @AnnaTrail-xp8pr
June 16 was 40 years I graduated and one of the best summers of my life. Boys of Summer was the perfect song to sum up that summer and every time I hear it, I am back to the summer of 84! Such an epic year.
  • @mikenixon2401
I love it when situations like this work out for a writer's win. Thank you for bringing out these stories I would have never know.
  • Boys of Summer is like a movie, like a film. There are characters you can see in you mind as the music goes by. Amen. Who hasn't written a movie in their head and imagined all the visuals while listening to that song?
