It's a common debate in the Rocket League community. Can you get Grand Champion with 0 mechanics? I personally think, yes. And today I end this debate once and for all by proving it myself. This is how I got Grand Champion with no mechanics.

People often debate whether or not mechanics are important for ranking up in Rocket League. In my opinion, mechanics are not nearly as important as you think if you're trying to climb the ranks. Even some experienced coaches overvalue how important mechanics are. Obviously, you need some mechanical ability to an extent, but people often estimate that they need way more than they actually do. In this video, I got Grand Champion with a piano as my controller to prove that mechanics aren't actually that important.

  • Plan to get to GC with no mechanics: try and party up with people who have insane mechanics😂
  • Wayton: tries to reach gc with no mechanics.. also Wayton: hopes to find a teammate who is mechanical
  • this actually demonstrates that your tm8s can hold you back or especially slow you down
  • @wyet_
are we gonna talk about how his team mate went from diamond 3 to grand champ in like 3 days
  • This debate really comes down to your definition of “mechanics”. You have to remember that when you do a challenge like this, all you’ve lost is your muscle memory. Your read of the ball’s trajectory and physics that you’ve gained after thousands of hours is still there. I’m sure you’d agree that without that, you definitely wouldn’t have completed this challenge. So it depends - do you consider being able to read the ball a “mechanic”? A lot of people would say no, but I’d argue that in order to have the ability to read the ball well, you would need to have practiced mechanics that require that skill, such as double taps, shooting, saves, etc. So while reading the ball may not, in itself, be a mechanic, it is learned through training things that actually are mechanics, despite those mechanics themselves not necessarily being needed to get to GC.
  • So you don't need mechanics as long as you have teammates with good mechanics. Great info. This will help so much...
  • this only prove's me that i can never reach grand champ in solo queue
  • I agree with the sentiment and the statement that you can get high ranked without mechs, but I think the way you went about it doesn't do the best job showing/proving that for 2 main points imo: 1. teaming up with someone who you admit is both under-ranked, and better mechanically than the other players -- kinda devalues your point. 2. 3s is a gamemode where one player's mistakes have the least amount of impact -- so trying for GC (or whatever rank) in 1s would be more impressive not to say this isn't impressive or to say that the statement is not true -- just that it could've been proved better imo much love <3
  • The problem with videos like this is how do you classify reading the ball, reading the 50s, understanding how and where to hit the ball, how to preserve momentum etc etc. Funny how people who spent thousands of hours doing all these things, all of sudden claim "it's not important". If it's not important then coach somebody to get gc in less than 200-400 hours (overall playtime not the in-game stats). P. S. I am not hating, love the content
  • To me, this only really proves that someone who has already achieved gc with good mechanics can still work their way back up there using the knowledge they gained from being such a high rank, even when being limited in their mechanical ability.
  • Wayton: You don't need mechanics to reach Grand Champ 5 minutes later Wayton: We need to team up with someone who is really good mechanically ???
  • @GuilleVQ
In my opinion, you were not playing with 0 mechanics in this video, you were just learning to use a new type of controller. I think what is most accurate to playing with 0 mechanics is what Flakes did. Keep the ball in the ground, faking, and good positioning.

in it's simplest form, i like that the piano controller makes him so excited about the game again. i remember being hyped about those basic goals man, what a fun, easy time <3

Great work Wayton! I see that, in the case of playing 3s, having tm8s that you can SYNC with is the key to FAST rank ups, especially in the D3 to C3 range. No doubt I think you could grind up to GC solo queing but would take way longer, but in that point in 3s isnt it more like the TEAM is ranked at GC (maybe higher levels this is more applicable) more than the individual player? Unless you get into playing 2s and 1s where individual game sense and mechanics has much more responsibility to reach those higher ranks. Game sense is fundamental and generally more useful than than higher level mechanics in 3s as you demonstrated you had the game sense to read players, ball bounces, and play around whatever random tm8s were doing.
  • @SpecSolve
the best way to get to GC with no mechs is to have been a GC for 3 years and play on a smurf account tbh thanks for the video. love the piano play though frfr
  • @CurveEx
Wayton: You don't need mechanics to rank up. Also Wayton: Just find teammates with good mechanics! (6:14 ) I mean your title is not wrong... but actually you just proved that there is a level of mechanical ability needed to rank up. Also you using a keyboard is not playing with 0 mechanics. You just "reset" your physical ability which you quickly gained again.
  • I would love to sit down and chat with you one day to have a conversation regarding these types of debates. Things like this show up on twitter and reddit, constantly but I don't believe anyone has truly addressed the nuances regarding things like rank, mechanics, positioning, play with the team vs for the team, etc. Idk if you're interested but I think it have a ton of benefit to the community to truly dive into what makes this debate so triggering for so many people.
