The polish and presentation in this game is insane. One of the greatest console shooters of the 16-bit era here.
  • Never got this back in the day. Such a throwback to the magic of the original Sonic the Hedgehog with those scrolling backgrounds. I remember seeing pictures of Gaiares in EGM and GamePro and thinking how interesting it was to have anime-like cinematics in a shooting game, as my experience with the genre was limited to just a few of the more basic TurboGrafx-16 titles like R-Type and Blazing Lasers.

So many great shooters on the Megadrive, the Thunderforce series, Gleylancer, Verytex, Whip rush. The list goes on.

It was 28 years and this game still shivers

Shooting game masterpiece!.  The first Genesis game to pack 8MG.  I remember the commercial for this game with the kid with the mullet :).  Anyway, Gaiares is one of the best shooting games in history.

Very nostalgic game. The game is great and all tracks are superb.

The music for the intro has a progressive rock feel to them, I'm thinking Pink Floyd/King Crimson, it's awesome! I rented this game about 10 times before I noticed there was an opening, always skipped it without realizing.

i think this is when screen size bosses finally got its due with fluid animation and movement.
  • I remember this title; it was one of the best shoot' em up for 16 bit console ever with Thunder Force IV

FINALLY! I remember playing this at my babysitters house in 6th grade.....but could not remember for the life of me what the name of the game was! This an amazing game! I also think there's a glitch you could exploit in the first level, I stumbled upon it accidentally though so I don't remember. Either way, thanks for the upload!

Simple? This game is awesome. I love the fact that each level has like 3+ scene transitions. Graphics graphics, awesome music, fantastic weapons and gameplay mechnics, etc. Win/win :D

2nd best soundtrack out there next to thunder force! Quality

So the mermaid comes out after you blast her clam enough times..... The joke is writing itself here. ;-)

Goddamn, that fucking Mission 6 music... As repetitive as it is, it still gets me pumped.

The evading skill of this guy is insane

Awesome game, my only complaint with the gameplay is that I wish it didn't use checkpoints. I prefer shooters where your next life drops right into the action without having to go backward. I had Gaiares and Thunder Force 3 on the Genesis. TF3 was generally my favorite but it was too easy. Gaiares is the polar opposite in terms of difficulty, I don't think I've ever beaten this game legitimately. I especially love the sequence in this game where you go underwater to fight a robotic mermaid, then you're accelerating past light speed, fly past some black holes, and hunt down the Grim Reaper in his Haunted Space House. And why not. Space shooters are inherently absurd, and I love a shooter like Gaiares that has the right amount of batshit insanity without being silly or cute. Classic early 90s shooter.
