So it was my 1st time doing work in the opera space and who knew that hip hop influence would be part of that! Last month I had the opportunity to take part in producing/directing a scene for a libretto created by Nicole Paris, Katherine Skovira and Robert Whalen. It’s 30-minute opera, a response piece to Vinko Globokar's solo piece ?Corporel (2002), which asks the performer to use their body as an instrument, vocalizing and hitting the floor and parts of the body/face. I had a lot of fun filming and putting this together with an amazing group of people! This project was also featured in resent OPERA America forum

    Really interesting to hear them outside. The living room videos have a very particular sound quality that has all the soft reverb of that kind of intimate space. I like hearing folks play the park kinda more.

    I really like Nicole’s style of Beatbox over the other professional beatboxers trying to imitate a commercially produced song with half of the sound effects which sounds quite ‘empty’. Nicole seems to use beatbox as a tool to express her creativity and the rhythm inside her. The best part is how she transits between beats and split them so smoothly. She may not have the best instrumental mimicking skills but she’s definitely got the essence of beatboxing.
