Today, we're taking a look at Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, a title that released in 2003 during the "Golden Age" of Gundam games that were released for the PlayStation 2 console.

The game includes a fantastic re-telling of the third 0079 Gundam movie/later third of the original anime in its included Story Mode and much, much more. If you were ever a fan of Journey to Jaburo, an earlier PS2 Gundam title, this game is essentially its unofficial sequel.

  • Can we also establish the fact this was the ONLY game to feature Stardust Memory's campaign outside of a Super Robot Wars or G Generation game?

Man, I sunk so many hours into this game. A true classic IMO.

The mission mode made me always want a RPG set in the one year war. Imagining building your pilots skills over time, choosing perks as the campaign progresses.

Encounters in Space was how I finished the original Gundam show when I was a kid since it got pulled due to 9/11 happening. Played it again about a year back and it really does hold up. Also it introduced me to Johnny Ridden and the High Mobility Zaku II which both are easily in my top five favorite Gundam characters and suits.
  • PS2 era was the golden age of Gundam games for me. I still own all of them and go back to them from time to time. Journey to Jaburo is still my favorite of that era. I wish they would port these games, especially the Gundam battle assault 2.

It's important to point out that towards the end of the war Gundam is barely capable to keep up with Amuro's fast reflexes so they have upgraded it's joints with magnetic coating and Amuro supposed to receive the Alex but we all know that it got destroyed towards the end of 0080 War In The Pocket.
  • The lead up to Lalah's death without the music is absolutely hilarious. Gotta love anime dub voice acting.

I'd like to see remasters for many of these older Gundam games. I really don't care for multiplayer only games and that's what most Gundam games have been lately.

Amuro saying "The sheild's gone!" is burned into my brain.

Ah, Encounters in Space. The game that kept me from seeing the good route in Thoroughbred mode no matter how hard I tried to trigger it. It's interesting to look back as a somewhat obsessive Gundam fan and see just how many side stories were first officially introduced to the US in this game. There's a Stardust Memory radio drama episode, the Mayfly of Space, Thoroughbred (original and alternative versions), the video game version of Blue Destiny (the one volume manga came out first in the states I think), and the old MSV stories for Johnny and Shin. Combined with the second run variations in the Main story (including more TV series specific elements and crossovers with Johnny, Shin, and Gato) and the pretty brutal but fun mission mode, it really had a lot to come back to. The successor game Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow, unfortunately doesn't quite live up to Encounters in Space in replayablity and can feel extra grindy with the new assist characters, but it's also a fun game.

I'm super stoked about this video! I watched the previous videos on Zeonic Front and Journey to Jaburo and it brings a whole lot of memories back in the mid 2000s. Even though Journey to Jaburo was my introduction to the series it was sadly the only game I got to play that took place in the U.C. timeline and setting. The only other Gundam game I got to play was SD Gundamforce and I think you should tackle that! Love the series and keep up the work!
  • A fun thing with this game is there's actually some special encounters, alternate routes, and even an alternate story path in Thoroughbred. These are almost all just hidden behind your own performance, though White Base mode iirc requires you to have already finished it once to be able to do the extra events.

I absolutely love this game and i still have my copy. To go along with what you said this game also has a ton of replayability. White base has the movie and TV mode with different allies and encounters, and secret what if senarios based on score. For example one route on Solomon doesnt end with the big zam fight...but against gato and his Rick Dom. Even has two new animated cutscenes. Thoroughbread also has two main routes with a good and bad ending for each. And a tip for scoring. its not just multi lock but some ships dont explode all the way after being killed. keep hitting them till they explode again for double score. Great video and sorry for the wall of text, this game just has so much to offer and unlock. it and zeonic front are my favorite two ps2 gundam games. Looking forward to more videos.

This was such a good sequel and they added all of the things missing from the first game like the ability to play the ZEON side and epic space battles. I own both the American and Japanese versions of this game.

This was the only way I got to experience the ending of the original show as it got pulled, and would often play Journey to Jaburo and this back to Back when I wanted a 0079 story fix. It was also how I got to experience 0083. And I used that BGM player to score a soundtrack for so many of my fun times with my MSIA Gundam figures!

What an awesome game!!! Don’t know how many times I could’ve played it trough, my first introduction to my favorite character Shin Matsunaga the White Wolf
  • @jeremyhall2727
My favorite Gundam game of all time. It was bloody awesome fighting in space. I loved the battle assault series too. I was shock when I found out about the PSP spinn off versions... The vs series
  • I still have this game. It's one of my favorites on the PlayStation 2. I was a beast in this game. I played the campaigns over and over and was never sick of them. I always pushed myself harder each time to get an A or S ranking. The very few times I would have a vs game with friends or one of my cousins they couldn't match my reaction time
  • Great video brotha i love gundam one of my favorite animes of all time wish i could play this game some day.
  • I remember playing this game when I was around 2-3 at the time. This was a couple years after its initial release (probably around 2008-2009). This game was what got me into Gundam, and I cannot be more thankful thanks to this game. Although this was my very first game I had ever played as well as my first Gundam game, I remember playing some of the missions. Just some memories which I can remember while some are vague, leaving me curious to learn more about this game I played long ago. I've watched playthroughs which makes the whole gameplay very enticing in my own opinion. As someone who's been a fond of this game, I'm glad that this game is getting more recognition from people like you in the U.S. as Gundam wasn't considered to be that enticing to the western audience. I do hope in the near future, if I get a chance, get a hold of this game again and relive my early childhood. This game will always be in my heart.
