About "The Dark Web" series: The internet has a dark side, and you probably don’t even know it exists. Go behind the cheerful veneer of social media, communication apps, and platforms that have made our lives easier and more connected, and you’ll find criminals using the same apps and platforms to run illicit and dangerous activities.

00:00 Alpha Bay

Drugs, guns, counterfeit documents, and much more are sold on dark web marketplaces that run on anonymous browsers and use cryptocurrency. AlphaBay was the most significant marketplace, transacting over US$800,000 a day, enabling its founder to live a luxurious lifestyle in anonymity until international law enforcement caught up with him. Alphabay was shut down in 2017. In August 2021, there were reports that the website was online again.

45:05 Sextortion

Sextortion was invented by one woman in the Philippines, Maria Caparas. She turned the idea of making friends online and recording explicit video chats into a profitable blackmail and extortion scam that could not exist without social media. She now runs a mini-empire seemingly beyond the reach of authorities, which has led to many suicides.

01:32:34 Candy Group

It was one of 640 million closed groups on Facebook. Hiding behind anonymity, the creator of the child pornography group Loli Candy and its 7,000 members hid their activities on Facebook and WhatsApp – the dissemination of horrifying images of abuse. While they were eventually brought to justice, many more thrived.

02:18:55 Wildlife Trafficking

They may look like ordinary posts of exotic pets for sale on social media. But they are feeding a growing trade in illegal and endangered animals in Malaysia and beyond. This criminal industry is worth billions and is jeopardizing attempts to protect endangered species.

There's a dark side to the internet, and you probably already know it exists. Go behind the positive veneer of social media, communication apps and platforms that have made our lives easier and more connected, and you'll find criminals using the same apps and platforms to run illicit and dangerous activities. Various crackdowns have happened over the years but has it helped?

1 gram of coke for 40 dollars? what a rip off. what's the link to that site? so I can give it a 1 star?
  • @camvworld5674
The government is more concerned that they aren’t able to tax this.
  • I'm 24 and although I live in another city and work in construction, my Mom makes me send her my credit card statements because she doesn't want me to buy useless things and my Internet is monitored, I can't even have Netflix. I'm from a Korean family. She controls a lot of my life, unfortunately, and as the oldest I have to look after her. I have told her she's kind of interfering, but I agree that parents need to really talk to their adult and minor children about the dangers of the Internet, teens getting into their friends' cars as there can be distractions while driving, meeting people in person, leaving your drinks alone opening a window for someone to spike them, not honking your car horn, saying thank you when someone hodor for you, etc. Yes, there have been lives taken because the suspects didn't receive a thank you! I have a niece and I couldn't believe I acted like my Mom when I found out she had a lot of social media accounts and 'friends.' No 13 year old has 1200+ followers on Instagram and Facebook.

Excellent doco- very well put together and well incredible subject , - I’m amazed and so sad when I think of those young victims of extortion and those poor animals 😢

My thing is. Where does all the captured money go 😂😂
  • It's truely sad we can go all out, broadcast, prepare, panic, over buy, stay isolated and have constant awareness and antidotes with logical solutions for COVID, but not any of these damn issues!!!
  • @allyouracid
Funny how they always show the known scam sites when they showcase what you can all buy on the darknet.

Alex Cezares did not practice good opsec. He was not as smart as he appears to be and it's surprising he got away with it for so long.

it is time for the owners of these big social media companies take accountability for the actions this is a world wide epidemic. But they rather be in the pockets of our politicians

Why is there always a shady Canadian guy behind things like this 😂 as a Canadian, whenever I watch documentaries, the person behind the scenes is a guy from Ontario, Quebec or BC
  • @willsmith4584
all i hear is some great arguments to legalize drugs. Criminals are making too much money to ever quit finding new and better ways to sell and addicts are suffering in silence unable to ask for help and often ignorant of what they are taking and how to take it safely.
