How to layout your palette for oil painting.
My oil painting palette layout on a sheet of tempered glass. This is how I layout my colours ready for painting. I love using glass palettes as they are very easy to clean (you must use safety glass though which is toughened). My studio palette is an old mirror which is quite heavy but gives me a large mixing area - not something you would want to take plein air painting! I also use old fridge shelves (free items from discarded fridges) or work top protectors bought from kitchen DIY stores for very little money.

I usually have a some grey mat board underneath the glass to provide a neutral mixing surface but this could be any colour you like. For the video demo I am using a white background so the colours show up easily.

It is good practice to layout your colours in the same order each time you paint so you can find the colours you want easily and quickly. These are my core colours that I lay out each painting session, I do add in others for different paintings such as: Indian Red, Violet, Cerulean Blue, Yellow Ochre, Carmine, Burnt Sienna.
