ENG ► Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole (Oahu, 20 May 1959 - Honolulu, 26 June 1997) was an American singer and musician native of Hawaii. It is also known by the pseudonyms Bruddah Iz, or Bradda IZ, or simply IZ.
■ He became famous in 1993 with the release of the record 'Facing Future' containing the medley of the songs 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' (which was written in 1939 by Harold Arlen with lyrics by EY Harburg, played by Judy Garland and inserted in the column score for the film 'The Wizard of Oz') and 'What a Wonderful World' (standard brought to success by Louis Armstrong) executed in a version with just the ukulele accompaniment, played by the same Kamakawiwo'ole.
This song was included on the soundtracks of several films.
In the latter part of his life, Israel 'IZ' Kamakawiwo'ole suffered from a severe form of obesity, coming to weigh 340 kg being tall 188 cm., which was even more out the contrast between the size of his body and the tiny ukulele played by him.
He died from respiratory problems on 26 June 1997 at the age of 38 years. The whole day, the Hawaiian flag was at half-mast. His body was exposed to the Capitol Building in Honolulu, where more than 10,000 people paid tribute to him.
■ His ashes - as you can see in the video - were scattered in the ocean at Makua Beach.
Iz was nicknamed 'The Good Giant' by his admirers. It is also remembered as being one of the last full-blooded Hawaiians: always smiling and optimistic about him was particularly appreciated the love he felt for his land and his people.

"IZ" è morto per problemi respiratori il 26 giugno 1997 all'età di 38 anni. Le sue ceneri - come si vede nel video - furono sparse nell'oceano a Makua Beach.
Iz è stato soprannominato "Gigante buono" dai suoi ammiratori. È ricordato anche per essere stato tra gli ultimi purosangue hawaiani: sempre sorridente e ottimista, di lui fu particolarmente apprezzato l'amore che nutriva per la sua terra

My dear husband passed away on July 9, 2023. Right before he passed he said he heard this song and it relaxed him. He said he knew now why I loved the song. He passed away a day and half after telling me this. This was the only song I played at his funeral. 😭 We were together almost 35 years and had 7 Children.
  • His 61st birthday is tomorrow. He passed away at age 38. I wish Israel Kamakawiwoʻole a happy birthday, because he’s still around in spirit.

  • @dreierclan1
I'm pregnant with a surprise 4th child. I play this for him every day. My dad and my sister know how to play this on the ukulele so I'm hoping he recognizes it once he's born❤
  • My beautiful son Aaron played this lovely song for me a few years ago when my incredibly loving parents and best friend and brother had all just passed on. It touched my heart very deeply then that my young man was so touched by it, that he recognised and knew too that it would make me smile with gratitude for what we had in our very missed family members... There is no better blessing in this world than the true and genuine love some of us are so fortunate to share with others and our family... I wish that for everyone.. And may this special artist and musician rest in piece knowing he gave the world something very unique and special when he gave us this song. God bless Israel and his family always ..
  • @kayceeb1845
My husband loved this version of 'Over the Rainbow" Listening always makes me cry and hope that they're both in a better place.
  • Im reading comments of people saying they're still listening to this song in 2023. This song is not one that will ever be forgotten and will be played year around. Listened to this song a few days ago and it made smile and cry. Smile because it takes me back to the islands while im fighting traffic or just having a bad day. Crying because this song just does that to you. Its just a beautiful song sang by a beautiful soul. Have a beautiful day everyone 🥰🥰
