Video Game Music Samples! The video where I dare to ask if Billie EIilish took from a Plant Game, if Logic took from Mario, and most notably, when will Rihanna take from Undertale? Thanks to many of your suggestions, we're back talking about a really interesting topic - popular songs taking music from video games!

No, it is not Jolyne :_relaxCatboy: ERRORS: On screen has an error - XO TOUR LIFE is by Lil Uzi Vert, not XXXTentacion. Must have copied CAME2KILLs text and forgot to change the artist ALSO, turns out Navi in the Skrillex was someone hired to sound exactly like Navi! They are Salamimeats on the website formerly know as Twitter.

i cant believe billie eilish created plants vs zombie
  • @magtea3836
Idk maybe they did I haven’t watched the video yet

I'm still hoping that one day, there will be a new pop song that uses the same baseline riffs as Waluigi Pinball. That'd be epic.

As a composer myself, I want to say this is a nightmare. You can spend hours writing a song you think is all your own only to realize "Oops! All Doom Soundtrack Motifs!"
  • @Just_Shade
Trying to monetize a video like this genuinely sounds like a nightmare, huge dubs to the patreon backers

An interesting example of sampling in music for video games can be Chirp from Minecraft and Orb of Dreamers from LittleBigPlanet. Both songs start with the same sample from an old electronic instrument. The songs go in compeletly different directions but the start is uncomfortably similiar.

If you want more instances of Lil Uzi Vert sampling from video games, the original version of Secure The Bag used the Clock Tower Factory theme from Super Monkey Ball 2.

Your increase in quality and production is amazing, can't wait to see more content from you on this kind of level.
  • @CodieDean
The Metal Gear Solid V trailer theme was a sample in itself, being from Elegia by New Order.
  • "Basically if you've never heard of it..." The realization that yes, there are people who've never heard of the original Plants vs Zombies devastates me in ways I cannot properly explain.

I like the running gag of Alax entering the room in the weirdest way possible

Not only does Aurora sample Coconut Mall, but so does Puffle Party's main theme- I believe Chris Hendricks even admitted to the deliberately similar opening. (Same goes with Mystic Cave Zone and the Box Dimension.) At least, they seem to be a Billie Eilish situation.

5:25 the word you're looking for when it's not a sample but they use the same melody is called interpolation

I think with some of these you've hit upon what's sortof the fundamental issue with music plagiarism, which is that to some degree, EVERY song is a remix, at least within the 12 tone system. It doesn't make them less original in any measure, because mutation is a large part of how human creativity works. A truly "new" idea is fairly rare. edit: a fun thing about this is how if you listen to a wide enough breadth of music, you can start making connections. This might be a bit of a neurodivergent thing but frequently when I am listening to a song another starts playing in my head. Maybe I should become a mashup artist, lol

Exact sample or not, I'm always listening for these "musical allusions" - I play a lot of jazz, and this is way more commonplace and acceptable in that world, and it shows partly how the artists think, but also ideas they wish to evoke in the listener who knows the allusion. It's really interesting, and I think it's really cool that you can take certain musical motifs and trace them back through time to other songs
  • @MikeDaddyMCS
Honestly I’m surprised nobody has sampled Shovel Knight’s ost or sound effects yet. It seems like it would be easy to work with

That one TheFatRat song using the Yoshi sample
