I have a UB9000 and an older Oppo-203. Both are excellent 4K HDR players but 9000 edges out the 203 when it comes to HDR10. Its HDR Optimizer gives it an advantage. Dolby Vision on both players is about equal. Where the 9000 falls down, however, is playing MKV and MP4 Video files via its USB input over a network. It is limited in the kinds of video and audio encoding in these files it can handle. It can't playback lossless audio (Atmos, DolbyTrue, DTS-HD or DTS:X) if they are encoded in a video file. It can't play E-AC3 audio as well. It also can't recognize chapter marks in MKV files. The 203 can do all of this and more. That having been said however, the 9000 is my primary disc player and the 203 is my primary video file player. It's nice to have those options. One last note, the Panasonic UB820b has the exact same video processing and picture quality as its big brother, the UB9000 so aside from a less robust physical build and lacking some very advanced audiophile abilities, at half the price of the 9000, for most, it is the way to go.

In 2024, the MAGNETAR UDP 900 is the best universal player you can buy.

My Sony x700m is in for a warranty service. This player has a issue with freezing near the end of a movie, all new disc 1st time playing so its easy to know its the player. After the fact i now read others had the same issue but are out of warranty.
  • I got the Sony X800 last month..ok for a few weeks then started freezing on different new disks..found out it has these issues and a video on here to adjust some settings which didn't stop the freezing so I've sent it back to Amazon for a refund and will get a Panasonic.. disappointed that Sony hasn't sorted this issue as I liked the brand for a long time and still use my Sony AMP now that I've had for 30 years.

Is panasonic generally better than sony? For bluray players?
  • Is Internet required to use a blu ray player? I like to own what I buy instead of being allowed to use what I pay for only if I pay for an app or even Internet service. I've heard that you need 'net to prove you're not stealing the movie or something and requires updates come up all the time. Wondering that the truth is. Thanks.

I have a Panasonic ub820 for 3-4 years and it doesn't read my 4k disks anymore. I cleaned my disks and it still doesn't read them. I spent $450 on this machine and it's very disappointing and frustrating!!

List forgot Pioneer LX500. This list is not accurate. Sony X800M is far superior than 700.
  • @gralen
I have the 820. It is good but not that good

I had the Panasonic UB820 for 2 weeks. The user interface was mediocre, but played most discs fairly well. I appreciate the fact that it auto-detects Dolby Vision, but the internet functions, including the apps, were terrible, constantly freezing, and just showing a black screen. Also, the response to the remote key clicks were very, very slow. What a waste of money.
