Lyrics:

Leave your principles at the door
Spare me
Purge your guilt for the nameless hoards
Thrill me you clown

You always beat the system somehow
Now the rats return to take their bow

A dog wakes inside the carnivore
A heart bleeds
A conscience won’t help you to win the war
So fool me you fraud

Genghis K
Pinochet
Mao Tse Tung
Kim Il-Sung

Steven Wilson: This song is about those who claim to have the interests of the people at heart, but when it comes down to it there is only ego and self-interest. I find myself reflecting on what sort of person would actually be so driven as to want to rule over a whole nation, and aren’t these people by definition the very last people that should be allowed to do so? The rats will always save themselves first.

Gavin working his magic on the drums once again. Such a sneaky beat and as he said "it's sort of like morse code". Porcupine Tree never fails to amaze me.

What a banger riff. Having heavy riffs and atmospheric sections so close together and working well is clearly the strength of this band.
  • Nothing like a new Porcupine Tree song to kick start your day, I love it
  • @joshuakodrat
It makes me feel back to "In Absentia" era, and the outro is very similar to the outro of "Wedding Nails". First listening the snippet of this song from Gavin's gear talk, and no doubt their another great song from the record
  • This is my favourite music video that Steven Wilson or Porcupine Tree have done, I love how it's fun and silly but still disturbing and appropriate for the song.

Never heard of the band before... But this album is INSANE!
  • @BrodyReyno
This song…SLAPS! Man what a groove. This album is gonna be a classic
  • Oh yes!!! Love this track! It has all the elements of the PT sound. Thanks for still creating music!
  • @tommoody728
This is one of the most aggressive songs PT have ever put out, I love the video too.
  • This song just says to me "Porcupine Tree is back!" And it's everything I wanted.

This is my favourite of the singles so far. Absolutely amazing work. The 4/4 is hidden so well in the intro riff!
  • @gtrulez
I've seen them play this song live at the Ziggo Dome in the Netherlands this week, and it was absolutely fantastic!! AMAZING 3 hour long concert! The whole concert was filmed that night, so a new live Blu Ray/DVD is in the making!

the chord progression of the refrain goes down like nostalgic shivers on the spine
  • this is the only thing that i miss from porcupine tree. that is richard's atmospheric sound. this song is my favorite track of the album by far
  • Steve, when the he'll did you learn to play bass. Sneaky bastard. His bass on this album could hang with the big boys for sure. What a treat

Brilliant. It's classic Porcupine Tree (whatever that might be !) Interesting that SW says that a lot of the songs on this album were started before or during the lengthy hiatus and this definitely feels like something from Deadwing era PT. Anyway, no need to dissect it, just enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing the guys again in London.
