Thumb Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that effects the small joints of the thumb, particularly the basal thumb joints (CMC and STT joints) . This video aims to provide evidence based information about Thumb Base Osteoarthritis by answering the 3 most common questions asked by people who have been diagnosed with the condition :-

1) What is it ?
2) Why do I have it ?
3) What can I do about it ?

If you cannot find a splint that fits comfortably (which can be a problem if you have thumb base squaring) then I would recommend seeing an occupational therapist, or an orthotist who can custom make a splint from thermoplastic to fit your individual thumb shape and avoid rubbing.

I had severe Thumb Osteoarthritis (bone on bone) in both of my hands (left and right). I tired just about everything including laser warming and nothing helped. Finally, I had surgery to remove the Trapezium and suspend my thumb with tendons between the metacarpal and the index finger - like a suspension bridge. I had this done in Colombia (I lived there for 5 years) by a specialist doctor there (recovery time was 3 months to hand use - full recovery 6 months).. My left hand is going on 9 years now (I'm 73) and my right hand is now 4+. I play guitar and have full hand movement and strength which in my opinion is a very good test. No pain to date. I'm not recommending this to anyone, just sharing my experience. I hope you all the best in your journey to reduce / eliminate your pain.

I wish every person who makes a video on here would do what you do and show up front what the video will be about and how long each segment is. I watched the whole video but it was valuable to me to know in advance what was coming. Thank you so much. I will now subscribe!

Regular epsom soaks are very helpful! Also, the golden ratio of 1:1 thc and cbd products really helps when using my thumbs for outdoor chores on my 12 acre forested homestead. I also bought rubber door grips for commonly used doorknobs and knob style bathroom faucet controls.

I have no idea why youtube put your video in my feed, but I'm glad it did. My thumb has weakened over the years, and last year I noticed the squaring you mentioned. It doesn't hurt if I don't stress it. Just knowing what's happened to it is a relief. Thank you for the excellent explanation.
  • Thank you SO VERY MUCH!! 11minutes w/ you taught me more than 2 visits to a Hand Surgeon. Had an X-ray diagnosis of Basal Thumb Arthritis; am currently looking for a new Doc for 2nd opinion. Also looking for Occupational Therapist, which this Surgeon prescribed, when I balked at the offer of injections. I told him I'd like less invasive options first. He never offered any exercise & wouldn't even explain the brace & how it's supposed to work like you did.

I have this, and other areas affected by arthritis. I’m pain free now that I’ve switched to a mostly carnivore diet. If I eat bread or processed food, the chronic pain returns.

Thank you for this! I think I developed this in my left hand due to holding cell phone, playing video games, etc. Informative, and concise. Well done.
  • @Mirovanje12
Excellent, straightforward explanations. It’s an added courtesy to viewers that Mr. Bunting lets them know what he will be talking about and where that topic occurs in the video. Nicely done!
  • Thank you for the information. It gave me a clear picture of my condition and at the sane time gave me the options for treatment. I will admit that my condition stems from the fact that I read too many ebooks and I use my affected thumb too much flipping the pages.
  • @DonaldMcAllister
Thank you for explaining what I have been suffering for for many years. I thought I had Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, but this makes much more sense. Either way the Doctors will probably not do much about it, but you have given me some good information on how to best treat myself. That is what I needed most. Kudos to you!
  • My paternal grandmother had this thumb pain, my father had it, and now my sister and I have it. I thought it was heredity. Thank you for the discussion. I'm 72 and have used my hands a lot in repetitive tasks almost all my life. I think I am at the stage where the small thumb splint will work. I am also at the age where various doctors are needed ( I live in the USA). I guess I'll add one more! I'll tell my sister about this video. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this video! You are the first to explain this problem so well. I woke up one morning in 2020 ( in central US) after months of being very ill with COVID to find my thumb laying flat to my palm & severely limited in being able to open back opening up my palm. I have worked on it on my own since as no medical person would offer any advice & now I have it 10-15 degrees yet from being able to totally open back making my palm flat. Common sense drove me to get a supporting brace & I continue to work it trying to gently flatten the palm & get the full range of motion returned. Your video has encouraged me & suggests I've been doing the best course of action for it. I am subscribing to your channel.

I clearly rememer my aunt and uncle years ago, so kind and loving they were! I'll never forger my aunt Betty and my beloved uncle Arther Iddis!
