I've been streaming every GT game I haven't played to complete all of the License Tests over the past few months, and I've been enjoying it a ton... until I got to Gran Turismo 5.

The online service period for Gran Turismo 5 has come to an end.

I really loved GT5, and it was the biggest jump in the series in terms of content and features: dynamic weather and time, damage, customization, track editor, WRC, online, Nascar, Top Gear, a partnership with Sébastien Loeb, Jeff Gordon and Sebastian Vettel...etc. but I think that was part of the problem, it was too ambitious.

I love Gran turismo 5, and nobody can change it

While I think PD are to blame for a lot of this game's problems, I also think that some of its issues are because of the PS3 itself and how much of a headache it was to develop for. I think it's fair to say that the career structure and UI could have easily been better, but the game's mediocre graphics are somewhat forgivable given the hardware they were developing for imo.

A great summary of this game would be this quote from Colorshed Productions review "For a game that took almost five years to develop this feels incredibly rushed."

Just finished watching the video, i'm really glad you got to finish the video despite all the trouble with the editing software lmao. Is weird how the game lacks in lots of stuff previous GT games had, when it was delayed several times through a couple of years. I loved this video a lot, really informative and you have very valid points, keep up the great work! PD: I can't wait until you do the license tests for GT7. Seeing you guys play through every GT game was really fun, looking forward to March 4th!
  • I like the bspec aspect. Since you train your drivers and they ain't just anonymous you get a feeling of relation. I also like casually watching races sometimes.

I honestly enjoyed the variety of cars GT5 had. Sure there were cars that were more detailed than most but the less detailed ones were still good to use. Or at least some of them were.

Alright, I'm commenting again on this video as I didn't get a chance to elaborate my views on your video overall. I agree with you on most of the issues in the game, though I will say I didn't notice anything rough about the visuals outside the obvious standard cars. I remember defending them quite a bit when I first played GT5, often thinking they were better in than out. But now, I feel like they were a waste, I would've rather have PD spend the time just modeling a few more PS3 tier cars than just port all of the PS2 cars over. The second issue with them in GT5 is that they make the car list feel inflated. Yes, there's over 1,000 cars in the game, but a good portion of that list are cars very similar to each other, especially the ones that are region rebadges of each other like the Mazda MX-5/Miata/Eunos Roadster for instance. PD should've just kept the JDM models and dumped the rest. I'm soooo glad you mentioned the B-Spec mode, this peeved me, having to playthrough the same career mode twice, but with an AI driver doing it. To add insult to injury about not being able to speed up the race, they tripled the race length of each event. I HATED that! and I believe the prize cars were better too, which was annoying. Until the season events and daily login bonus got established, the in-game economy was also terrible with some cars costing between 10 and 20 million credits, meaning if I wanted a Ford MkIV, I would have to spend countless hours grinding for it. A problem that still hasn't been fixed in GT Sport. Lastly, I will agree with you on the level up system being a big problem, buutt if I'm honest. I didn't struggle as much as you. I remember being able to get to level 15 quite easily, I didn't notice issues with it until the high 20s and lower 30s. Maybe because I did a different path from yours?

GT6 fixed most of GT5's issues by making everything far more consistent and not going too ambitious. It's more like a "reeling it back into reality" update. And that's why the modding community focuses on GT6, it's the more polished game and doesn't require anywhere near as many things to be fixed. Just imagine if GT5 was like GT6 at launch......

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who thought GT5 looked rough, I especially despised the extremely pixelated shadows and reflections, even for 2010 standards they were bad. The game was VERY enjoyable online though, there were actual role play lobbies believe it or not lmaoooo
  • Man.. I am glad you decided to pick up a few games in the GT series. As a car enthusiast, I find joy in so many different entries in the racing genres. It would be a shame to just stick to one, as so many have such a unique apporoach. Every entry has something to appreciate, and its own quirks. It's never as serious as some make it seem, to be so dedicated to ONE series.

I love GT5 even with its flaws, I'm playing it again recently and I enjoy it even more because I changed the way I play, made possible only because THE ONLINE SERVICE PERIOD FOR GRAN TURISMO 5 HAS COME TO AN END. The graphics aged meh, a bit dark but I could live with it(I'm sick of screen tearing though). I have no problem with the level progression, mainly because I tune my car while racing(gives me xp) and I repeated a lot of races due to me having less than 100pp or more compared to my opponents because they're THAT slow. I made the game difficult for myself because I used save editor to give me tons of money to make grinding obsolete, it's my way of balancing the game and it's way more enjoyable because I was racing to win, not to earn money. I agree with your take on the UI being rubbish but more than the UI design itself, I felt like the whole thing was just so slow, it isn't hard to navigate in terms of visibility or the amount of infos on shown on screen, it's just slow for me. The cursor animation takes time and you can't move them quickly, the transition between screens takes MORE time, so it made the whole process of tuning, going to auto shop, buying cars, and choosing track become so tedious. I wish we could change cars/race settings during practices to make life so much easier too, I think that's the worst offender on the functions of the game. My main complaint on this game is the race difficulty. The AI's could've been more aggressive, there's no tire wear in races(offline), and there's no tire restrictions. Next is the Used Dealership, way too much Mitsubishi 3000GT, MX-5, just JDM in general. I'm a JDM guy myself but I think PD was a bit too biased on the selections. Also, the rare high end cars are way too expensive considering your wallet cap is only 20M, the price of 330 P4 Race Car '67 is 20M so wtf is this? I wouldn't recommend this game unless you use save editor like I do, the grinding is nuts, makes racing a chore so you would simply use the fastest car/best tire to make winning guaranteed, it's boring. Save Editor(add money/cars/DLC) guide is on gtplanet if you're interested and happen to read until here, also you can refresh Used Dealership by going to license tests, and enter the first one and just go to the next test without actually playing. Do this until you reach the 6th test(that's if you started from the first), and then leave. Yay, your Used Dealership is completely refreshed. That's my gift for those who read this long comment lol. Peepeepoopoo.

When I first got my PS3 (meaning a friend of mine lend it to me bcs he didn't use it anymore) I immediately put my head together on which Gran Turismo I should buy, and after scrolling through many articles and not filling the red bar on many YouTube videos—I set my eyes on 6 because from what I understand at that time, you can still get update files and it's not really an abandonware like 5. And here I am 4 years later, wathing this video and I couldn't be happier with my purchase lol Good review as usual. Literally just subbed to your channel yesterday but have been wathcing your videos for the past 3 months and I'm guilty that I didn't do it sooner.
  • i never actually played gt5 online but the career itself i found super enjoyable back in 2013 and now in 2023. It just has so much to do and work for and the game itself is just so nice to sit in and listen to the music. Games definitely not perfect but compared to gt6, 7 and sport, its the last gt game that actually tried to remain traditional and that in itself is something to appreciate
  • How i can play me the cars on Gran turismo 5 withoute run the car it self ?
  • @rufctr3
Man, This game just feels like 5 years in development was just people laying off and being lazy, No one really cared for it, and the amount of delays it got didn't give it any justice. Thankfully Polyphony have learnt their mistake with GT5 and 6, after GTS' pretty stellar graphics, modes, cars etc. Although it isn't a perfect GT game, i.e the penalty system and some other stuff, It still holds strong and imo, it's probably the best Racing Game for the PS4, currently, Very hyped for GT7 and I think it'll be the Best GT of All Time. Hopefully...

i was VERY surprised when i found out GT5’s release date. i thought it was a launch title… nooooo no no, i was way off.
