One morning in October 2021, Pastor Liezel de Jager went for a jog. She returned to her home only to be murdered. Her killer left her body at the back door. He is still free. Seeking justice for his daughter is Henk van Zyl, a former police colonel, a former Commander of the Police Academy in Graaff Reinet, and a former United Nations (UN) Project Manager in Police Reform. The bereaved father speaks to BizNews about the police investigation that has been dragging on for 581 days.

  • My heart goes out to my old school friend, Henk van Zyl. We shared many good times and many bad times together. My heart is broken for him & his family. God hold them in His Hands. Amen

Watched this because of the recent news that her husband has been arrested. My condolences to you and your family Sir. May justice prevail. Well handled Chris.
  • We still wait for him to be arrested.. walking around in our little town a free man.šŸ˜® Liezel ran with my sister, she was loved by everyone.šŸ˜¢

So sorry for your loss Sir. May you take comfort in the good life your beloved daughter lived. May justice be done.
  • I understand what you are going through. My partner died an unnatural death in Vincent Pallotti Hospital 4 years ago, I mourn him still. I did finally manage to get his autopsy, but it involved calling every week for two years, until they got tired of me. The police were very polite, but told me that there was nothing they could do, as the fault was with the nurses and the hospital and they were absolved from investigating them. They could only investigate the doctors, who were in this instance not responsible. This is outrageous. I did consult lawyers but was told that Vincent Pallotti Hospital had a lot more money than me, so I should forget about it. I will never forget about it.
  • I'm so sorry for you Henk. Totally unacceptable. May God bless your daughter and help the rest of us stuck in this country
  • This happened just near my home. His daughter was the most beloved pastor of some dear friends of mine. Her parishioners are still heartbroken, and they also deserve answers. I feel so sorry for Henk and the rest of her family. How can this police commissioner minister turn up for crime scene or disaster photo shoots and leave something like this totally up in the air with no feedback? It's outrageous. Please BizNews don't let this go.
  • It seems the broken system is designed to protect criminals and help them get away.

I am praying for you and your family. May justice be served and may your daughter rest in peace.
  • Many thanks Henk. May Liezel RIP But a shocking experience for any South African to realise the rot in this country.
  • This country is completely and irretrievably broken at all levels. This poor man is suffering double trauma.
  • So traumatizing to listen to this man. I personally wonder that where are the human rights organizations of this country to assist in matters like this. You will only hear of them when they stand up for the criminals, homeless and the people who are causing damages and pains to citizens. I feel for this man and hope one day he'll get justice.
  • Tomorrow I will wake and probably not feel so heartbroken. I will be okay but this gentleman has to go through another day in pain. So very sorry my friend.
  • Our daughter was also murdered in KZN. Still waiting for justice, but we have made peace with her death because to wait for the corrupt police (and yes we have proof) is to do damage to our health. They chose to go easy route and call it suicide of which we have medical proof that it is a pot of rubbish. It's now been 4 years and her autopsy report hasn't even been type yet. We gave it to GOD, but that deep unsated longing will never be filled. Our heart goes out to Mr Van Zyl
  • I am so sorry for your loss. So so sorry. May the bastard rot in hell. Please G-d let there be a hell. I pray for peace and serenity for you. While you continue your fight for justice for your beautiful daughter.

This country is a failed state in every aspect. The cANCer killed this country and it is terrible that Henk and his family have to go through such a heart-breaking ordeal.
  • The saddest moment in one's life especially when you spent your whole life serving as a proud Member of the Countries Police Force. Now in your own hour of need, those who are employed appear to show no sympathy at all toward a person who just wants clarity on the progress of his personal interest regarding his own daughter. Heart breaking to think of the traumatic time spent waiting for just a genuine progress report.
