Joachin Phoenix “Does violence in art make people more violent?” from an interview about The Joker

This Is absolutely brilliant and I would love to speak with him about this issue. This has many relevant applications to modern discourse about our problems.

What fixes our problems? Talking about them may exacerbate them.

Rilke: "The point is to live everything."

"for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified" - St. Paul

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers (or talkers) only, deceiving yourselves." - St. James, parenthesis mine

This is actually really interesting because Phoenix demonstrates an understanding of social contagions/copycat effects, as well as historical instances of this phenomenon. Given the nature of the film under discussion (which I haven't seen but have read synopses of), it makes this whole thing very meta.

When I first saw the title - I thought this was in relation to the new movie Napoleon - there seems to be something wildly and brutally honest about Joachin... Words - can't live with 'em - or without 'em... (let your words be few) if we could only learn from the stars: how to pour forth speech - without words... (by speaking iconically)? Thanks, Luke!

I think is tangentially related to something I’ve been thinking about recently, which may be the other side of this coin: Truth has to be embodied way before it can be articulated. And I think in attempting to articulate it before it’s embodied may also be harmful… or premature, like a baby born too early. In the life of Christ it’s pretty clear he’s keeping all sorts of stuff secret (verbally), while he’s embodying it at the same time. It was for our own good. And it continues to be. Talking about things too soon or trying to be able to contain it within language is like eating from the tree of knowledge of good and bad too soon.

I think this is horseshit to blame media and news reporters while absolving yourself from any possibility of negative perceptions.
