Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., spoke in a hearing Tuesday where U.S. Secret Service acting director Ronald Rowe and FBI deputy director Paul Abbate testified on the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

Paul asked Rowe if the Secret Service would be making changes in leadership in advance of Trump’s next political rally.

“Whoever was in charge in Butler, next week is not in charge of a rally in Las Vegas,” Paul said. “I think you really should say that. You should simply say that the leadership from that event is going through a process, but until that process, they won't be in charge of the Democrat National Convention. That would reassure a lot of people that they won't be in charge of security until it’s determined. Can you tell us something to that accord?”

Rowe answered that a different team is in charge of the Democratic National Convention.
The joint hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Senate Judiciary Committee was the latest to examine what investigators have learned about the shooter who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally, as well as the security failures that preceded the deadly shooting.

Rowe, who since 2023 had been serving as deputy director of the Secret Service, was appointed acting director after Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation.
