The game begins with an introduction showing a man named Pink Lenny and a tattooed Brazilian talking in a bar. Lenny is telling the Brazilian a story about how he really scared someone one time ("You should've seen the look on the guy's face"). Suddenly, two men burst in with guns and kill everyone in the room, except for Lenny, who slips out the back.

Later, undercover police officer John Tanner, recruited by the FBI after arresting Senator Ballard, and his partner, Tobias Jones, examine the body of the Brazilian at the morgue. The police captain informs Tanner and Jones of Lenny's disappearance and of the only witness of the attack. Tanner and Jones apprehend the witness, who tells them that the gunmen weren't after the Brazilian but were after Lenny, who is actually a money launderer working for Solomon Caine, one of the high ranking mobsters of Chicago whose empire goes from Chicago to Las Vegas.

However, Jones suspects that the Brazilian was working for Alvaro Vazquez, another high ranking mobster who is one of Caine's rivals. If Lenny was talking with the Brazilian, he may have switched sides. Tanner and Jones investigate a warehouse owned by Vazquez, but it turns out that the police were raiding the warehouse and Tanner and Jones split up to escape the cops, though not before discovering that the forged documents in the craters came from Cuba.

When Tanner returns to his apartment, he is hit in the face by an assailant (one of the shooters from the bar), who escapes down the fire escape. Tanner gives chase, but it turns out it was a trap set by Caine, who believes Tanner is a hired thug trying to take over his business with information from Lenny. While Caine's bodyguard, Jericho, drags Tanner away for execution, Tanner hits him in the face and escapes Caine's compound. Meanwhile, Jones gets the Brazilians after him by his own investigations; this, along with Caine becoming aware of Tanner's pursuit of Lenny, force Tanner and Jones to flee Chicago. On Tanner's suggestion, they head for Havana to follow the Cuban shipment trail. The movie heads off into Las Vegas and finishes up in Rio.

Cutscenes and story was way, way, way, way, WAY ahead of its time. Just like the game. A timeless masterpiece.
  • these cutscenes are the reason why this game required two discs due to how high quality these cutscenes is back in the day and loaded a lot of memory forn only one disc. And judging from the overall theme and them game itself, this was waaayyyy ahead of its time. Totally A Diamond in the Rough

Really love jerichos semi auto multi round double barrel, really nails that 70s movie feel of total unrealism

I know reboots are getting out of hand but I’d love to see the Driver series get a serious makeover with the same storylines and setting

I remember playing this as a kid thinking the cut scenes looked so realistic

As a Brazilian, I remember playing this game when I was a kid and being really excited about it because it had some Portuguese dialogues lol 😂

This game has an intriguing story. One youtube game critic compared it to a Steven Segal movie from the 80's. I love the dark gritty look of these cutscenes. Some great neo-noir detective stuff.

Tanner's voice in Driver 1 was much cooler IMO. Raspy, deeper, mysterious with a much more confident, to the point attitude.

I remember staying up an entire night as a kid when I got this for Christmas. I was probably 11 years old

If i was a famous director and i had the money...Id make driver 2 into a movie, of course no CGI at all, real cars, smashing into real things, maybe one day...
  • @elkillerx
They should remake this game! Maybe a Driver 2 Definitive edition? I'd totally buy it!

You can say this game was first GTA
  • I know the gameplay itself is very basic and the gameplay graphics aren't great, but the storyline is what makes this my favorite game in the series. The plot, the locations/travel element, the music, the dialogue, it all went together so perfectly. It had all the elements of an 80s/90s action movie, with even some elements of Bond thrown in. And I felt like I was part of it. I remember wanting to be Tanner. The cutscenes are what really did it for me. I'd never seen anything that in depth in a video game before. The game had so much depth and substance. It's still my favorite video game I've ever played, even though it was also the most difficult. The Chicago Jericho Chase, Bomb Trucks, Find the Car and Chase the Gunman gave me and all my friends so much trouble! It's funny how we were all stuck on the same missions, and finally beat them around the same time. My cousin had to help me beat the gunman mission. IDK why in 2 and 3 they made the second to last mission the hardest. Number 1 had a decent storyline and missions, but was so annoying 'cuz you couldn't get out of the car. Number 3 had the best gameplay, but took a more darker and serious tone and I also didn't like that it ripped off missions from the previous games and scenes from 90s/2000s action movies like "Speed", "Fast and Furious" and "Transporter". Many people also complained it ripped off GTA too much. Pretty much everything after number 3 was an abomination, and we don't talk about "San Francisco".

All I want is a liveaction movie from this! It would be so frickin awesome! The story is solid and the pase and thrills are great! Offcourse the would need to add some more scenes since you play the driving missions and chase in between the cutscenes but man it would be so good!
