In Celebration of the U.S. Capitol Dome

Published 2016-12-15
The United States Capitol Dome, symbol of American democracy and world-renowned architectural icon, was constructed of cast iron more than 150 years ago. The Dome had not undergone a complete restoration since 1959-1960, and due to age and weather was plagued by more than 1,000 cracks and deficiencies.

With the support of the United States Congress, hundreds of expert craftsmen worked day and night to restore the Dome to its inspiring splendor.

This video celebrates the successful completion of this once-in-a-generation project: www.aoc.gov/dome

    This hits different in 2021
  • Wow. It's an incredibly beautiful and awe inspiring view to see the Statue of Freedom siting on top of that dome. Wow! America The Beautiful, despite our struggles.

There are not that many national buildings that as eloquent as that. Humanly flawless.
  • Holy shit: I've never given the capitol building much thought... but if you're reading this, you can probably finish the thought. Beautiful and awe inspiring.

And the sight of it being raided by hillbillies and nazis is shameful
  • Well, I agree with Paul Ryan on one thing... The Capitol is truly awe-inspiring

Thank you for this beautiful video. Made my eyes water considering what just happened a few days ago.

Absolutely amazed there are people, companies that can do such a huge task of restoration!
  • I was lucky to visit the capitol twice, one of those in a private tour once it was closed to the public. Priceless amazing building that holds such importance and history. I was humbled and grateful to be there.

A fitting homage to the dome, the Capitol and all it stands for. Especially after the violent insurrection of Jan 6, 2021 by people who understand nothing of democracy and its enduring value. I write this from South Africa, having lived in the U.S. for 5 years.

What a symbol; what a tragedy befell it, and America, January 6th, 2021!
  • If you at a picture of the dome at night and above street level with the dome lights on I see a profile of president Lincoln, he is looking in down at congress.

I visited the capitol this past weekend. I didn’t even have words to say. I was speechless looking at our beautiful capitol.

Wow! This beautiful video makes you appreciate the Capitol building so much more, esp. after the deadly and destructive insurrection on January 6, 2021. The entire monument could have been destroyed. It is all the more important that American citizens should learn about it, and become familiar with it before it is gone. I am sure that French citizens never thought that they would wake up one day to see their Notre Dame cathedral in flames.
