I honestly thought that Frieren would say that she didn't want to be a first-class mage anyway when Serie told her that she failed. Also, regarding the fluctuation of the mana, Serie probably only suppresses about 90% of her mana while Frieren suppresses more like 99% of hers, which is much more difficult to do consistently. Remember that Frieren was even able to suppress her mana entirely when she was catching that Stille bird, but it required all of her concentration, so I guess suppressing a higher percentage causes fluctuations more easily when doing other things (and Frieren was much more active than Serie who is basically just meditating all the time)
