The NYC Subway just keeps getting worse, and now since more and more riders use it without paying, it's becoming a lawless dump instead of the world class transit system new yorkers deserve....

Another L for the law abiding. We are being played for suckers while criminals are worshipped
  • I'm from Germany and i am amazed how Americans managed to mess this up so badly. There are no gates and nothing stopping you from getting onto buses and trains. Very rarely there is a conductor checking the tickets but it happens like once every 100 rides. Yet fare evasion isn't nearly as big an issue here as it seems to be in New York. And i can assure you, this most certainly isn't because Germans are some morally superior people. It's simply because fares are actually affordable for poor people here.

I tried to pay the fare once. The turnstile said to go, they refused to turn, I was running late, I said screw it and ducked under.

In a functioning society you'd get fined for using an emergency exit when it's not an emergency.

I live in a 3rd world country and never seen someone fare evade a bus lmao

As soon as a real emergency happens, lawyers and judges will have a field day with this one

Oh so the City itself doesn't like being robbed but its ok for stores & actually citizens 🙄 😠
  • "The Greatest City" in "The Greatest country on Earth" can't run a fucking subway system. Can't tell if it is pathetic or hilarious.

I'm surprised New York isn't as safe as I thought it was. Then, I realized Spider-Man isn't real.

In Finland we dont even have these kind of fences or gates, we just trust that people buy the ticket before going in. There are just random checks of ticket sometimes by checking people in the metro or tram etc
  • The funniest thing I've heard this week is the NYC is going to hire a psychologist to tell them why people don't want to pay the fare.

The fare keeps increasing, but the service keeps getting worse. If they keep increasing the fare to compensate for people evading it, more people are gonna do it.
  • I live in Poland and for years it has been the goal to catch up with the USA. Now i hope we'll never catch up...

it's like if people barely have money to get by, the wont pay for things they can get away without paying and instead of trying to make life less expensive, you just punish the people trying to survive
  • 15 seconds can be the difference between life and death in a REAL emergency.
  • @Krhys1
Escape From New York isn't just a movie anymore, it's a matter of survival.

Hey NYC, here is your solution: MAKE THE FARE FREE. And tax more in city tax to cover the costs to run it. Benefits: Very few people tax evade; fare evasion won't be a thing; MORE tourism because it is FREE to go almost anywhere in NYC meaning more business coming into NYC, meaning more sales tax, meaning more income for the city Downside: Politicians don't get to line their pockets whilst thinking short-term and fucking up everyday lives.

Meanwhile in Vienna...no turnstiles, no physical barriers. Just random controls from transport personnel. Seems to work great, estimated 96.8% ride with a ticket.
