Chinese New Year is such a wonderful holiday and I’m so glad it’s becoming more well known in the US. We desperately need a mid winter celebration for the lingering cold days (yes there’s Valentine’s Day but that’s more for couples and less about togetherness). I love Chinese culture and I hope to respectfully integrate this into my family’s life. Not a bastardization like cinco de mayo, but a chance to learn and enjoy.

In Malaysia, the Hokkien community celebrate the 9th day. 拜天公. Sugarcane is tied to house gates. On some years, there is more firecracker action when midnight strikes on 年初九 than 大年初一.
