In this video we are installing three, Tesla Model 3 battery packs in a fully electric, solar van we are building for the artist Redfoo (formerly of the band LMFAO). We go through the process from building the battery box and support system, to modifying the battery terminals and BMS wires, to install and safety.

  • Hi, Brett. First of all, I’m a serious sailor. I live on my sailboat. I have a small Victron battery bank with solar panels. But that is not why I’m commenting. You and I have a handful of mutual friends, including Joel from Australia and Louis from England. In fact, I see Louis is Bus in your shop, and I was going to ask you about that. I admire your work. Nice job on Redfoo’s 12:25 rig.

Nice work! I've been following you all for a while now - since Route Del Sol - and you've inspired me to convert my 1991 Mercedes T2 609D RV to electric. It's currently got a very reliable diesel engine that I'd like to crate up and sell to help pay for some batteries. I got 1600 watts of solar on the roof already and after doing the van and buslife thing for a while, it just started to become obvious that if I'm going to keep increasing my battery capacity, I might as well make the drivetrain electric and outfit it with a ton more solar. Appreciate you all documenting your builds and breaking down the process into bite sized pieces.

Wow man, that is a heck of a modification done with the Tesla HVB modules well done! Can't wait to see what's next love to know more details as this helps other build DIY EV's! Take it easy, Casey

Yo. I've had this Idea for a battery layout in a Van scenario and watching you and your family work (plus the concepts and though processes you've articulated therein) makes me think I've got something. Custom electro van could be a reality for me.

The sailboat / sailor analogy is great. With OEM EVs getting so good, I feel like the value of custom EV projects is all about knowing how the vehicle works and being able to maintain it yourself. I've been following since the original RdS van... It is incredible how much more battery you are able to fit into this. I'm very curious about the details of how you installed that copper busbar onto the module... How you cut the bottom existing busbar, how you ensured the hardware won't vibrate loose, everything. I am working on a very similar setup (my modules are stacked one on top of the next) but I have the same need to remove the existing terminal.
