In today's video, we are going to talk about Low Visibility Take-off (LVTO).

We are going to analyze all the aspects and factors that you need to take into consideration when operating in Low Visibility.

When the RVR (Runway Visual Range) is below 800 meters the LVP (Low Visibility Procedure) is in force and if the RVR gets below 400m you need to perform a Low Visibility Take-off (LVTO).

There are additional things you need to consider when performing ground operations during Low Visibility. You might need a Take-off alternate, for example, you need to check very closely where you are and where you are going, you need to understand the configuration of the light for your taxi routing and take-off.

It is extremely important that you don't cross the CATII/III holding points when the Low Visibility Procedures are in place.

Always make sure you have the correct runway lighting system for your takeoff minima.
Pay particular attention when lining up for take-off, identify your centerline lights and your edge lights.

A good practice is to select the ILS frequency active in order to track the Localizer during your take-off roll.

When operating under these conditions it is extremely important to have clear and good communication with ATC at all times, especially if a non-standard situation arises, such as a Rejected Take-off for example.

Remember if you are in doubt about your position make sure you stop and ask assistance from the Air Traffic Controller.

Why do you need to see only 6 CL when doing a LVTO? The minimum RVR requirement is 125M, but 6 lights means 90M.
  • @tev3009
Fantastic job by the way ! Thank you for sharing.
  • @hessamstar
I’m preparing for ATP and this was extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to go into details.
  • Great video again. That was a nice trick using the localizer of the ILS to help keep you on the centerline of the runway for takeoff.

Absolutely fantastic explanation capt. Amazing work .

Thank you very much very informative
  • Would it be possible to do a video on temperature correction for an approach in low temperature and how to program the FMC and fly the approach? Thanks the great job

Hello, Could you please make detailed video series on- how to do RTR communications, ( from basics_terms, structure, procedures, maps, airport types, airspace types etc.) Thanks.
  • Nice work, Captain! Please, tell what flight simulator program you used.

Brrrrravo Capitano. Italiano Eeenglish made it fun to listen to! Lighting..not lightning..lightning is bad news!
  • Good video thanks . My question in CAT 1 if the RVR is less than 550 but the arrival aircraft reports RWY is visible and clear can i allow him to land or should i force him to go around? And if i allow him to land what the phraseology i should use . Is it cleared to land or land at your discretion?

Thank you for the video. I just wanted to ask you if the 6 centreline lights(90m) is applicable to RVR 150 or for RVR 125 only? Also for the take off alternate, does it need to be cat 1 weather conditions at least?
  • @tev3009
On the edge i count 2 edge-lights (120m) so which value i keep between the edge lights and the 7 centerline lights (105m) ? I presume the higher ?
  • @Driver170
Hi, will you do the same for LOW VIS landing? Ie from approach brief to landing
  • @kocmhsn
I cant see proper english subtitles at the beginning of video, how can i reach to proper english subtitle?
  • @Fedeultramotard
COULD YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN ABOUT THE CASE WHEN RVR IN TOUCHDOWN ZONE IS NOT AVAILABLE ? ARE WE ALLOWED TO PERFORM PILOT ASSESSMENT?
