The Anglo-Saxons impose their culture and their authority on the northern reaches of Europe, we discover that the first Englishmen were, in fact, Germans And yet there never was a people called Anglo-Saxon. In truth, these people came from Northern Holland, from the lower Elbe, from the Jutland peninsula and from the Schleswig. And yet these northern people enjoyed a golden age unaffected by a Rome. Evidence from the priceless hoard of Tureholm, and from richly furnished cemeteries in Sweden, reveal a rich and powerful people; ambitious, too, for just 30 years after the Romans relinquished Britain, the "Anglo - Saxons" made their move By 455, they had swept in through England's East Coast, drawing mythical but petty resistance - the legend of King Arthur almost certainly dates from this time. Although the real knights of the Round Table were feeble, helplessly calling the Romans back for help, as the Saxons swept forward pushing the Celts into Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall.

Men carrying weapons and women carrying more domestic items is correct like 99% of time. This dude is applying modern beliefs to ancient civilizations. There are always exceptions when it comes to women walking around armed like the men but they are very few. Women were still primarily responsible for domestic activities because they had the children which meant they couldn’t go hunting or fighting for long periods. And if they lived through the birthing experience they then had to raise the small child. I’m a society where the whole people could be decimated by one good sickness, or a bad harvest, having children was not really optional as it is today. It was an imperative.

Interesting but could do without the not so background "music". If you have some hearing difficult. That noise makes listening very hard.

Not a surprise but still a missed opportunity when it comes to the Frisian role in this subject. The Adventus Saxonum was preceeded by a Frisian presence from the first century onwards. Hadrian's wall already knew Frisian divisions of auxilliary forces like the Numerus Hnaudifridi ('Nothfrid's war pack'). the Frisian impact was real, as Procopius pointed out in the 6th century when he specifically mentioned the 'Phrisioi' (even before the 'Saxoi') as the most numerous people in Britain. Even now modern (Westerlauwrsk-) Frisian shares old words not or hardly alive in (Nether-) Saxon. Like 'jitte' for 'yet', 'hawar' for 'however', 'knyft' foe 'knife', or 'b(o)oy'(ke) for 'boy'.
  • This was really a great video telling me things I didn't know about my ancestors. Christianity just swept in and told our people that now be had to believe in their God and it's easy to see why. It made them very very rich. Whenever a rich man was dying he would have to give them lots of his land so they would pray for him. Thankfully my people were smarter than a lot of others, they could see how the Catholic church had more land than the King himself did and the things that they would force on the people I don't think they liked either so we became Lutheran and now we are not religious and I would say better people than those who will sit and pray and think of themselves as good people because of that, while voting for a convicted felon who would walk into young girls dressing rooms while they were undressed and much more and that was what was forced on people back then and hard to get rid of:) My ancestors were Anglo-Saxons and Vikings so this is much fun to watch with a lot of information:) Thank you!!
  • Wonderfully interesting insights into the Anglo Saxons seeing the didn't leave chronicals or writing's to refer to.

When the Saxons, Angles and Jutes migrated to the west they did not go to England. The land was Britannia, England, as a name, came later.

Britain today is just a nuclear-armed hedge fund. The only comparison with the Anglo-Saxon era is that back then slavery was in force for a large part of the population of England and it took the Norman kings to eliminate it once and for all on this island. The others, the “free men" tilling the soil had no more rights than the cattle they bred. It seems that the British governments of recent decades and in particular that of the Anglo-Saxon Rishi Sunak would like to return to this ideal of society. The powerful, the lords and masters on one side, the poor, the vulnerable and the weak on the other. Nothing in between. In 2024, in the UK, 20% of children under 18 live in poverty. 25% of people aged over 65 live in a precarious situation. 😱
