I find it so funny how all these Canon shooters swearing only by “colour science” and “dual pixel autofocus” slowly and quietly disappeared.
  • This is one of the most genuine explanations of switching brands.

Thats funny you said how we all started on a camera brand. I knew nothing about photography. My wife and I just had our twin boys and wanted to take pics of the 10 years ago. We saw a nice little red Nikon D3300 and bought that. Next thing you know I fell in love with photography and upgraded to a D7100, then D600, then D750. Almost switch to Sony to get the A7iii but I was already havliy invested in lenses. So I stayed. Now I own a Z6, Z6ii, and Z8. All my friends have all different brands and they all are great cameras. Its how you use them.
  • I use to own Canon gear too, but when the sony a7iii was released i made the switch. It was the fact it made my job easier. I think Canon as a brand is still great. Especially for stills. However, they haven’t done much to innovate the video side for there ecosystem. Sony offers so many solutions for creators. Plus having access to third party lenses makes the barrier of entry easier for beginners.

I still shoot Canon for stills, but I’ve moved to Panasonic for video. (S5ii). My reasons were no limits (codecs, time limits) and increased dynamic range. Panasonic is made for video. They don’t hold anything back. Real time LUT support, shutter angle, etc … I love it. I understand the reinvigoration from a new tool Jake.
  • Welcome in the CLUB 😃 I love my FX6 and my ZVE1 😍
  • I shot on FX6/FX3 cameras always in Cine EI mode for all projects with no exception. From documentaries to commercials and even in challenging shooting environments like events. Not only Cine EI maximize all the sensor capabilities like dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio, it really helps maintain consistency in color and exposure settings across different scenes or shooting conditions, which is especially useful for projects with multiple shooting days or locations. With the low and high base ISO (800/12800) of Cine EI, the only thing you need is to use VND to control the light at all times and fast lenses to expose properly in low light. Works perfectly in any situation, image is always super clean that way. You don’t even need to overexpose in most cases. Only downside of Sony footage is that I find it sometimes a bit too sharp, the G Master lenses, which are great for AF, doesn’t help in that regard. But for solo operation they’re still your best bet. Cinema lenses like the Cooke SP3 makes a substantial difference though. Other than that, Sony’s Cinema Line cameras are truly amazing.

Welcome to Team Sony! I've had my Sony FX6 since the drop and I love it!
  • I also started with a Canon, but it was a SL3 ahah. Loved that camera, learnt all of the basic stuff with it but the time came for me to grow up. After asking all the professionals arround, everyone told me to switch to Sony while I was “just getting started”. Bought a Sony A7IV and I couldn’t be more proud of my decision. That camera is a beast and Sony keeps making great gear along the year! Looking forward to see some of your work with the FX3, Jake! 🫶

I'm looking to get into a Sony platform for the same reasons. I'm coming from a Blackmagic platform, but I definately would not sell off my current setup, only add a Sony to it because they complement each other and don't overlap.
  • Welcome to the family!! Super excited to see some Sony product reviews from you in the future 🔥🙌 Hope you get sponsored by Sony
  • Any love for black magic cameras? I am getting distracted by the 6k g2 - currently using the R7 & R8 with the 3 main RF 2.8 glasses, but I love coloring in resolve and am intersted in Braw with the blackmagic look. I was recording a podcast and needed the autofocus, but now am transitioning to more creative/narrative work. Thanks for the vid, great explanation on your thought process. PS - full frame is amazing in smaller spaces as well, and can really help to get good framing with the ability to be so much wider - it just opens up additional options, which is why the R8 has been a great companion to the R7.
  • Great Video! How do you make your Text pop up like that? And even the Picture you showed us of the Canon Rebel?
  • Canon is sharp with the r5c(terrible battery life) and r3 but they dropped the ball by not making a R3C. The R3 is very good in lowlight and 6K downsample. The battery life is also great.
  • I totally understand this. Only reason i stick with panasonic/lumix (from gh5 to lumix s5ii & s5iix) is only because of the IBIS. Colours can be manipulated either way. I dont care about autofocus and crop sensor on 4k 50/60fps hahaha my wedding shooting style is 95% handheld 😁 Just my 2 cents.

Can you simplify the color grading process for a beginner. Would love to simplify the cinematic look with fundamentals on Sony.
