Ray Kurzweil: Does AI Make Immortality Possible?

Published 2024-04-09
Ray Kurzweil, computer pioneer and futurist, presents a hopeful view of what AI can achieve in the future in a wide array of fields, from language translation to medicine, energy, education, transportation, and farming. He argues that by 2029, AI will achieve human level intelligence and that “most diligent people” will reach “longevity escape velocity,” (the ability to add time to our lives through technological advancements at a higher rate than our longevity is being used up). The mission of the Walter Bradley Center for Natural and Artificial Intelligence at Discovery Institute is to explore the benefits as well as the challenges raised by artificial intelligence (AI) in light of the enduring truth of human exceptionalism. People know at a fundamental level that they are not machines. But faulty thinking can cause people to assent to views that in their heart of hearts they know to be untrue. The Bradley Center seeks to help individuals—and our society at large—to realize that we are not machines while at the same time helping to put machines (especially computers and AI) in proper perspective. Rays hair is looking pretty dope. When I go to the barber I always ask for the kurzweil.

3:40 if you already know who Ray is and want to skip the prechat.
  • @Ben_D.
Gosh, the host shouts a lot. He must be difficult to work with.

AI accelerating intelligence is a better description than artificial intelligence.

Hearing his passion when he gets slightly excited with that smirk is the best butterflies scientists can showcase. I love Ray's formulas and he is the father of this revolution in my honest opinion. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be playing with so many AI models in different workflows. Thank you Ray!

    🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻, We love you Ray!

If we can live for thousands of years, interstellar colonization is on the table - even with today's technology. No need for cryosleep, FTL, generation ships, or anything like that. Just long-haul star fleets that truck it from one system to another over the course of a few centuries. In terms of the proportion of our lives those journeys would take, it wouldn't be too different from the transatlantic voyages during the age of sail.

i love this guy, he is someone that can seem brilliant and understandable without denaturing content

Ray Kurzweil has amazing predictions! And his Law of Accelerating Returns is correct I think. I want to add a spiritual dimension to that, but even from a material perspective it makes sense.

People who use Q&A to promote their own work are the worst kind of people. Prove me wrong

I would like people to comtemplate the similarity between the paperclip maximizer hypothesis and current levels of drug addiction coupled with income distribution levels.

Is Bryan Johnson listening …. Does he have anything to say ?
  • @ZephyrMN
Why is the host shouting and trying to put the speaker down?
  • Intelligence in 1900s appears to take on a new definition of itself as something different than ideas . We definitely textualliy get inspired to create methods . We also plagiarize past textualism to correlate with present to better convey ideas and to teach " lessons " to one another but it must first be likeminded word & context. But generating ideas themselves seems to be distinctively different to intellect as it becomes abstract Euclidean minded good memorization skills but in humans this is a very niave, passive but eqaully it seems to be at odds with ideas as it can also show hard headed stuck in its way lines of measure. We've long known we straddle scales and have atleast 2 major archetypical minds one being very top down physical that appears to redifine intellect in its own image while now the other can use computation to articulate and show how they already use thermodynamics in not only correlating a red apple cool low entropy and will never be tricked as if a purple hi entropy state apple was really red. The intellect falls for bad magic the artist paints it before it happens lol

Am I the only one that finds this guy who is critiquing Ray to be somewhat dismissive and not a thoughtful interlocutor?
