Sammy Hagar & Eddie Van Halen perform a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.

A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.

Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

The best thing about Eddie Van Halen was his smile. His attitude was unbelievable. I cried when he died. No BS. Not ashamed to admit it either.

"The King... The King!" - Sam's words at the end of this vid. Once and forever. RIP EVH 1955-2020
  • I love how Eddie smiles, I never seen any guitarist who smiles like him. Rip Eddie....

God, I so miss the 80's...so lucky to have been in my 20's then.

The sheer joy Eddie took in playing and being on stage back then is incredible. At the end of that solo, the look on Sammy's face says it all. The King.

My favorite part is the look on Sammy’s face when Eddie does his fret board tapping at the end of his solo. Listen carefully and you can hear the crowd roaring too. Love it. Rest in Peace EVH. You are missed
  • The smiles on their faces. They look like kids on christmas. Somewhere in there is the very essence of rock and roll.

That off the cuff solo in the song is insane. It's not even a solo it's an extension of the song.It takes the whole song with it.Incredible sound, chops and timing.Killer solo.
  • One of the many things I admire about Eddie is how much fun he’s having while performing. He always has a grin from ear to ear. The way he played so effortlessly and the the fact that he was having such a good time while doing it makes him one of if not the best.

So weird to mourn someone that you’ve never met, yet had a huge impact on your life. Eddie’s passing hit me hard and I’m still not over it. You will always be the best to me. RIP King Edward. You are loved and missed by many brother.

History will be much kinder to Sammy Hagar than my generation was.

I've never seen a guitarist who smiles as much as EVH, it's like he's thinking, "I'm getting paid millions to do my favourite thing in world!!!!!"

Sweet Jesus, Eddie plays that solo so effortlessly just like it was a walk in a park.

When I heard of Eddie Van Halens passing it felt like a punch in the gut. Many happy memories with VH as a soundtrack to carefree kickass fun.

I am 55 and have seen a lot of death. Only 2 deaths have drawn tears. My sister, and EVH. And I am not remotely ashamed of it. It's impossible to overstate the influence of this mans music on the entire tapestry of my life. I'm sure thousands agree.

Eddie looking like a rock star and Sammy still looking like an aerobics instructor 😁
