Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.

The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.

Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and YouTube sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 YouTube subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

I have elevated blood pressure and still taking meds for it but I also lost 20 lbs with exercising, walking and cutting all sugars, processed foods, pizza and instead of salt I use cayenne pepper, my blood pressure is much better now- "You are what you eat"

I am from Germany and have come to visit relatives in the u.s for 2 weeks. It is really a struggle for me to find good stuff. Almost everything is loaded with chemicals from basic almond drink to simple bread. I basically have to cook my food from scratch. I ate out the other day and everything was so sweet and salty. My conclusion is that europeans should listen to these american youtubers with much nuance. We definitely have a very different food reality than the u.s

I just discovered your channel and I love it. I lost weight a couple of years ago and was able to get completely off blood pressure meds. For whatever reason, I got back to old habits, gained about 40 pounds of weight back and now I'm on two blood pressure meds and normally feel pretty much like crap, and depressed. I've been back on a healthier diet for a few days now, and feel like a different person already. Food is killing people in the U.S. every day, and restaurants and fast food are among the absolute worst. They have absolutely no regard for what they are doing to their customers. People need to get back in their kitchen and away from convenience foods. Thanks for the great advice.
  • What would be really interesting is if you could do a video on what is the best blood pressure medication. As a expert in the field you could really educate the masses.
  • Thanks for sharing this video! It was very informative and helpful! I'm taking notes. ❤

Better late than never, Glad I got you on the screen, very well explained Doc, wondering which salt is safe for health? Is avoiding salt from diet is good idea?
  • I’m so glad I found this! I’m getting serious about dealing with my blood pressure issues. Nothing you said is surprising to me but I love the way you presented it as I am creating my 2023 food plans :)

Here’s a pickle olive trick. Since black olives come in cans you’ll need an extra jar for them. Take your pickles or olives, drain the juice and refill with distilled or filtered water. Do this 3 or 4 times over the next few days. This eliminates most of the salt out of them.
