New Crandic switcher/slug set on CP train 475, Ottumwa, IA 5/20/14

On May 20th, 2014, I heard Canadian Pacific train 475 getting a warrant to depart the yards in Ottumwa, Iowa. With the long climb up Rutledge Hill ahead of it, I had plenty of time to get to the top before the train arrived. This crossing, at milepost 297, is just passed the north siding switch at Rutledge, on the northern edge of Ottumwa. After the train passes, we can hear the defect detector at MP 295.8 give its report on the train.

Pulling the train up the hill are two Canadian Pacific GE diesels, CP 9528 (AC4400CW) and CP 8941 (ES44AC). Following behind them was a surprise, a new set of switchers destined for the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway, also known as the "CRANDIC". These engines were built at Relco in Albia, IA, and are part of a series of eight mother/slug sets ordered by the railroad, from Relco's "1500XD" line. The slug is first in the lashup, CIC 302 (S4-143), followed by the mother, CIC 202 (L4-1500XD-M). To get to the CRANDIC, the engines travel from Relco down the APNC to Moravia, the CP from Moravia to Davenport, and then Iowa Interstate from Davenport to Iowa City.
