Orcas are the biggest member of the Delphinidae family, growing up to 10m long and weighing a whopping 7,000kg.
The distinctive black-and-white cetaceans are commonly known as killer whales. But are they really that dangerous?
In Spain and Portugal it certainly seemed so, after a spate of boat attacks that began in 2020.
With several boats sunk and warnings issued by the authorities, what was behind the orcas’ strange behavior?

  • Perhaps one of the orcas in that pod were injured by a boat or even killed and the orcas see some boats as threats.
  • Full disclosure I'm on team orca. Actually that's all I have to say. No sympathy for large shipping boats. And there's a special place in hell for any boat with a net.

Guess of an orca starts attacking thats when i start spear fishing
  • Orcas are giant, frivolous handless people who go through social trends. This could be a flair for activism spreading throughout their communities or it could just be a running gag, it is very hard to tell with these creatures.
  • @glory2cybertron
Quite a lot of species will readily fight humans. Orcas doing it just draw more attention due to their size.
  • @Arthera0
i wouldnt be surprised if they are doing it on purpose. we do deserve it as a group even if the individuals dont. lets just hope they are smart enough to figure out not all of us are assholes.
  • This must be a playful behavior. If they would want to sink a boat on purpose and because of aggression it would take them seconds to do that. Thats how powerful they are. They can even kill blue wales. Team Orca 🖤🤍
  • "Most importantly it's a prey that is not going to harm the offspring." Really? Are you sure about that? All it will take to put an end to this behavior, is one sailboat owner with a rifle who is not willing to have his boat sunk. I am amazed at the restraint of my own species in this matter.
  • I personally see this as a business opportunity, and what's needed is a bigger and stronger ship. Usually whale/dolphin sightseeing service is a hit or miss if the animals don't show up but this Orca phenomenon will make it a guaranteed opportunity for paid customers to see Orca up close and personal.
  • @Kiyoone
Actually, Orcas are doing those humans a favor... They are saying that their boats are too shitty and dangerous for those waters by destroying it🤣
  • @diefachfrau
They just what’s to play. They have no hands and they are intelligent. The „touch“ the boat with the teeth to get informations about materials…. They don’t do it on purpose
  • I'm a hunter living in the arctic. If my boat was attacked by orcas I wouldn't be in serious problems. They would. Just saying.
