ok so animal crossing designs, personalities, and in some cases even their names have been changed across animal crossing games...so where did they end up by new horizons?

I honestly miss the sheep villagers wearing scarves :( they all looked so cute!
  • @AkariEnderwolf
Wolf Link's Shackle is on his arm, where it belongs. It's on his foreleg in TP, so as a villager that would be his left arm, which looking there, he does have the Shackle.

Adding a few polygons, smothing out rough edges, & a change of wardrobe does not really qualify as a redesign in my book. A redesign would be something more drastic like changing Ibex horns into Markhor horns, changing brown fur into pink, changing a rounded water-feeding beak into a pointy songbird beak, replacing stripes with spots, drastically changing the shape & size of eyes, adding orvremoving things like tusks, replacing a long tail with a bobbed one...

Damn it. It's literally just graphical updates, not drastic changes. I need my 20mins back 😭.

I think its a bit of a shame they changed sheep from scarves to shirts like everyone else. It was a neat difference.
  • @Castcoder
Cube's shirt is still a reference since it's the background to the pause menu of AC1 that you can get if you drag a shirt to replace the background.
  • @Alx10k
Wolf link technically does still have the shackle. It's just a bracelet now
  • @Sencilia
Biff used to be more brown but his current design is red. Also Wolf Link does wear a shackle, it's on his left hand. It just looks like a bracelet.

I like sheep better with the scarves. The scarves simply make them look more comfortable and cute. They look so stuffed(?) Into those shirts....
  • There's something oddly charming about Ankha changing her outfit in every game she turns up in. Rip Sheep scarves, they're now less nude but less fashionable too.

You mention that Bella’s nose used to look like a diamond shape but I think something that should be mentioned is that some changes are because of the newer models having more polygons. The old models are low poly which can mean the details look angular sometimes

Poor Ed never gets any attention. He’s my favorite villager ever and he actually grew an eye in New Horizons 😂 He has a strand of hair over his right eye and in previous games they simply didn’t bother to put an eye on the texture but in New Horizons it’s now partly visible. 😄

Kid Cat also had a redesign! He had white and black stripes on his legs and arms, but now he has white paws that looks like gloves and boots. I think it's to fit better his "hero suit", and it does looks better, but still it's really curious because he had black and white stripes since since the start, but they changed it just now!

the sheep villagers loosing their scarves and given normal shirts is a crime

I didn't understand pointing out most of the things you pointed out. Like most of the changes were just due to hardware evolution and consoles capable of better handling more and more polygons and texture improvements. I don't see how is this any "change" to the characters. Like, Vivian's fur color was changed for something lighter, no doubt about it and it's noteworthy, but Bella's nose? You point out Bella's nose form "change" from a diamond-shaped nose to a round one like it was something special or unique to this villager, but not. Every mouse used to have a square nose because of hardware limitations. It's no change, it's just improvements to get as close to their supposed original design as possible now that consoles are more powerful and can handle incredible amounts of polygons, thus more realistic graphics with ease. Every mouse used to have a square nose up to the DS, then hexagon-shaped on Wii and 3DS, then round-shaped. You can point out that most things were slightly reshaped and rounded in the latest AC games compared to back in the days, but that's absolutely not what you say. You seem to believe a character's feature was rounded up on purpose as a redesign rather than just better matching how it was supposed to look in the first place. Things weren't "reformed," just "refined." Some characters were redesigned, like Valise (whose fur's become lighter than in her first appearance) or Vivian (whose fur color was changed over the years) but how's Cube chin coloration been different? I see really no difference. And Daisy's always had this gradient, smooth color transition on her ears. Once again, just that let less detail appear, but it's suggested. I've even found a top-view screenshot on her Fandom's gallery where you can clearly see the "gradient" (we're on N64). C'mon, what's your source, bro? For Derwin, same thing. Even Velma's glasses were divorced from her eyes. It's not character specific (as you hint it), glasses used to be sprites just stamped onto the characters' faces but were then separated to allow them to be clearly removable accessories. Probably console limitations as well. Vic wasn't redesigned. Bulls (as a species) were. Once again, most likely due to hardware limitations, they had to rely more on sprites than on 3D models. Walt. Wasn't redesigned either. Kangaroos were, instead. They all had that white spot on the nose that was removed (Also most likely due to hardware improvement. They just don't have to "mimic" light reflection through textures anymore). Wart Jr.'s warts were also made more "blended" or "invisible" on his face due to technological improvement. They probably were different color to mimic light reflection and shading, making them easily noticeable, but now they can be the same color as his skin since hardware and 3D models can handle complex half-sphere shapes and lighting. Other notable real design changes include the spots on Tangy's face, which have been greatly reduced in number in her latest appearances (And it's probably not entirely due to hardware limitations in my opinion since it's only in the VERY last game it was reduced, I'd consider it a change in her design). Vivian's fur was definitely changed for something lighter intentionally. Ursala's big smile was removed entirely, but she's not the only one. N64 models used to have bigger mouths than now. Some characters, like Samson, have kept this feature while most others (Ursala, Kody, Nibbles, for e.g.) have had their mouths made smaller. There's a huge difference between ONE character being redesigned, and the whole game being graphically enhanced or a set of features or a species being redesigned. If so, say that the whole species was redesigned (bulls' ears and kangaroos' noses, for e.g.) and don't make it sound like it was character specific. It's misleading. By the way, Wolf Link's Animal Crossing counterpart does have a shackle.....on his left arm.....because it's his foreleg..... And Weber still has two chunks of hair missing on the back of his head.....just like the ones on the front.....it's just not visible on FRONT artworks.....like what you've been working on your entire video.....He didn't grew back his hair. at all. Have you even double-checked anything? This video looks researched but it's just "reaction to AC artworks" and no reverification...
  • @HawtDawg
Wait have people had issues with Vesta? I've legit never heard anyone claim she could be offensive outside of this video.. there are real life sheep breeds that have faces with black fur and Im pretty sure that's what was being aimed for with the off-black purple color..
  • The one that legit almost brings me to tears is the redesign of my favorite villager, Static. I've adored him since '01 and have gone to lengths to get him in every Animal Crossing game. I have his original e-Reader card and a keychain that was only released in Japan. In New Leaf, they restructured his face and I haven't been the same. His neutral expression was this sort of cute frown, and he had a quirk where his mouth generally showed the opposite expression of whatever he was feeling - it gave him interesting and nuanced expressions (the "angry" expression looks more like laughing in disbelief, "sad" looks like a mirthless, sarcastic slight smile). I'd give anything to have it all back, along with the genuinely mean/abrasive villager personalities. New Leaf and New Horizons were great in terms of gameplay and customization, but I feel nothing for the villagers.
  • I've heard parts of the fandom insist that Gulliver and Gullivarrr are two different characters, "just like Tortimer and Cornimer"... but considering Gullivarrr's visits count towards the Gulliver's Travails achievement or whatever you want to call it, that tells me they're the same character.
  • @vanillamilkbread
all of the sheep used to wear scarves… tbh i miss it lol
  • @user-qf5sv1bl8f
I'm shocked you didn't talk about Stella's absolute redesign overhaul. She looked like a completely different sheep villager in the original Animal Forest game
