10 Neil Diamond Songs All Music Fans Should Listen To

Published 2019-01-27
There is no doubt in my mind that Neil Diamond is the most chronically under-rated artist to grace this Earth. With other artists often revelling in his songwriting class such as the Monkees with I’m A Believer and Urge Overkill with Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon in Pulp Fiction, Neil is very rarely recognised as a great by the general public. Today, we’re going to look at the man who seemingly only gave the world Sweet Caroline and ten of Neil Diamond’s songs from the archives that all music fans should listen to.

Top 10: Play Me, I Am I Said, September Morn, Hooked on the Memory of You, Brooklyn Roads, And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind, Morningside, Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show, If You Go Away, Holly Holy

Overjoyed that someone else recognizes that Neil's version of "If You Go Away" is a masterpiece.

The Serenade album, while short in length, has some gorgeous songs: “I’ve Been this Way Before,” “Lady Magdalene,” “Longfellow Serenade” and “The Gift of Song” all reveal his lush writing and arrangements.

Stones is one of his most beautiful songs, also If you know what I mean, perfect! Also The last thing on my mind, not written by Neil but the best version I have ever heard, his voice is outstanding and the arrangement beautiful
  • I love all his songs...ND a musical genius and icon ...I love him since the sixties up to now..thank you for sharing ❤️
  • Been a life-long fan since I first heard 'Cherry Cherry' and 'Red Rubber Ball' and started my collection when I served in Germany with the UK Armed Forces during the Cold War. I have an extensive collection but a favourite is Three Chord Opera and the songs'(You are) My Special Someone' and 'Leave a Little Room for God'.
  • I would also add "If You Know What I Mean." Great list with mostly my personal favorites.
  • Been in love with ND for all of my 50 years. Reminds me of my Mom. We played Hello Again at her funeral. ❤️
  • Add two more... "I'm Glad You're Here With Me Tonight" and "Lady Oh". Great video! Love Brooklyn Roads!
  • LA's fine, but it ain't home. New York's home, but it ain't mine no more. What a great chiasmus.

An admirable effort, although I can't possibly narrow down the list to 10. I can agree, however, that Diamond is criminally underrated despite the accolades that have finally come his way with the 21st century revival of his place in the popular zeitgeist. I do worry that he may be ultimately remembered far too shallowly, only for the admittedly fantastic Sweet Caroline, rather than the decades long catalog of evocative lyrics and lush, gorgeous instrumentation.

Nobody writes like him. Nobody sings lke him. It does not matter if one disagrees.
  • Please listen to, “If I Don’t See You Again”; it’s bittersweet. There aren’t adjectives to do Neil Diamond’s talents justice, an ‘XY’ comparable to no other.

I totally agree with your sentiment, that neil diamond is the most underrated artist (i would say songwriter, not artist), ive been thinking this for years. He is never considered by the “serious music fans” as being a great, i guess mainly because the casual fan only really knows him from his cheesy pop persona, primarily the karaoke singalong favourite sweet caroline, most “serious music fans” have already switched off at the mere mention of that , and i can understand why, to some extent you could argue he has become a “victim” of the success of that song (not sure if victim is the right word, but you know what i mean!). I would honestly make a case for him being considered in songwriting terms as up there with lennon and mccartney, dylan and the other greats. I know a lot of people would disagree , but i would certainly make a very good case for it. However, i would have chosen a very different list, i feel some of your choices would only serve to enforce the casual listeners stereotype opinion of him. September morn, hooked on the memory of you, play me, while great songs, youve already pidgeon-holed him right there in the easy listening bin with the inclusion of those, he already gets lampooned by many for the lyrics of i am i said. If you go away is an interesting choice, but i dont think it would make my list as it wasnt written by him, and i think he has done better cover versions (eg the last thing on my mind, make you feel my love, god only knows). Red red wine, morningside, and the grass wont pay no mind, holly holy, brother love would definitely deserve strong consideration. Lordy, the gift of song, if you know what i mean, dry your eyes , and after much deliberation, i THINK deep in the morning, would have been included on my list !
