The birth of the 49ers' 80s dynasty and the first BIG game Madden and Summerall called together. This was quite the legendary game in many ways.
  • @sports3117
The was the beginning of the greatest partnership in the history of sports television, Pat Summerall and John Madden
  • Man the start of a great broadcasting duo. RIP John Madden and Pat Summerall.
  • @BrandonKohout
John Madden and Pat Summerall were the masters of football commentary.

I bought a 9ers DVD pack when I was around 17 with Road to the Super Bowl and extended recaps of all their Super Bowl wins. Really made me fall in love with the game even more. Great to see broadcast highlights for the first time. NFL Throwback just keeps delivering gems.

Can we point out how great this Super Bowl really was?
  • How the Detroit Lions have the most inept leadership in sports: The Pontiac Silverdome was the biggest home field advantage in NFL history that was wasted away. 80,000 boozed up Detroiters smoking cigars from their seats right on top of the field. What a waste of an opportunity. I loved the Silverdome. It had a charm like no other.

The Bengals absolutely self-destructed in this one....wow !

The greatest goal line stand in the history of the Super Bowl!
  • So many first in this game the beginning of the 49ers dynasty the Bengals first appearance and the dynamic duo of Pat Summerall and John Madden R.I.P. to those legends
  • @jayNicks10
Oh Man! The Bengals had so many chances. But that under-appreciated 49er defense was coming up big in clutch situations.
  • @astrosjer822
Heartbreaking loss for the Bengals after a big comeback

Two turnovers inside the 5 yard line. Absolute killers. Although if replay existed back then, Collinsworth's fumble would be ruled an incomplete pass.
  • @chrisuncleahmad
Super Bowl XVI is also to this date the highest rated SB with a 49.1
  • That call of a catch by collinsworth that was incomplete being ruled a fumble just overshadows the rest of the game after that. To bad they didn't have instant replay

Final tidbit I'd like to spotlight is from another user who made an astute observation: Fun fact: SF K Ray Wersching kicked the ball on five consecutive plays, which definitely hasn't happened in another Super Bowl, but I don't know if it's happened again in NFL history. Kick 1 - 22 yd FG w :18 left in 1st half Kick 2 - Squibs kickoff, Cincy fumbles, SF recovers w/ :05 left in 1st half Kick 3 - 26 yd FG w :02 left in 1st half Kick 4 - Squibs kickoff, Cincy recovers and takes knee, end of 1st half Kick 5 - Kickoff to begin 2nd half
