In this intense summer heat, most of us have our air conditioners on full blast. But can you always trust the repair technician who comes knocking at your door? To find out, Inside Edition rented a home in New Jersey. Then we had two A/C professionals with a combined 70 years of experience examine the home’s A/C unit. Next, we had them create a simple problem, where none previously existed. We rigged the home with hidden cameras and booked appointments with four air conditioner companies in the area. Inside Edition’s Lisa Guerrero has more on our undercover investigation.

This has a feeling of How To Catch A Predator.
  • What makes it worse is the company he worked for wouldn’t respond. Crooked company there.

Love that they straight up told us the companies to avoid

Guys like that make our jobs SO MUCH HARDER because customers expect to get scammed and we have to overcome that.

I'm an HVAC service technician and that guy is what I despise.

Our local HVAC tech that owns his own business came out last winter because our furnace wasn’t staying lit. He fixed it in 5 mins, and literally didn’t charge us a dime even after we insisted we pay. He said “it only took me 5 minutes I’m not charging you”. One of the most honest, hard working guys I’ve ever seen. They don’t make them like that anymore…

That company should be put out of business
  • Poor guy tried to scam her then probably left $2000 in tools behind
  • @ctzoomie
That is outright FRAUD. NJ state Attorneys General should be targeting that company AND technician.
  • @DAS-Videos
The Gold Medal company really should be audited to see how many 'microscopic' leaks that they repaired.

What’s the difference…. This is robbery.
  • Dude tried to charge $1736 in repairs. Leaves Approximately $1736 in equipment. Genius!
  • Should be arrested for deceptive practice , lies and stealing money from customer!!!

My son and his friend have a landscaping business and do an elderly man’s lawn free of charge. The first time he did it he noticed the man had a window fan in his window and it was close to 90 degrees outside. He asked the man why and he said he was quoted 2k to repair his a/c unit and he couldn’t afford it. My son’s friend called over his brother in law (who does a/c repair) and he ended up repairing the a/c unit for him free of charge and my son and his friend paid for the part. He said the fix was minor and definitely not worth 2k. The three of them were so angry that someone would make this man suffer like that over pure greed. Especially since the man could have died in that heat. But some fools will kill someone for $10 so I’m not surprised…

We need more of this to keep companies honest.
  • @UltraHenry
He left the tools knowing he'd never need them again...
  • @mikemike7096
Actually in this situation $1736 seems fair , The breakdown details of the invoice: $36 to connect the wires, $1700 for the bag of tools left behind

I am 76 years old and have never been an HVAC tech. A couple weeks ago during the heat wave we lost all air conditioning suddenly. After waiting a few days for a tech to come out it dawned on me that I had purchased 4 years ago a run capacitor. I popped that baby into the system and within a couple of moments we had nice cold air again. I can only wonder how much a tech would have charged us to supposedly fix the system when all it needed was a $20 part
