Bought one as an all rounder radio, tremendous value for money, great fun, small size, carry anywhere, lots of features. Comes with it's own rechargeable battery and charging base for £15.

Bought a few of these to play with, very impressive what developers have done with the firmware. The hardware obviously has severe limitations but it is fascinating what the chipset can do.
  • Been enjoying mine for the last month or so. Bought it for the airband mainly and thought I'd made a mistake before finding that firmware that fixes the AM. Now it's a budget joy and Chirp support is ace.

Finally, a well presented description and illustration of the limitations, and actual purpose of this radio.

For the price, this radio is truly amazing. That it can receive SSB at all is just astounding. And it sounds really good for a device not even remotely designed for managing SSB. Definitely usable enough for me to have as an all day carry device, to check on bands now and then. Not something I would use as my main shack RX radio, for sure, but then at this price that's hardly what I'd get it for.

For the price of $17.00 US, I have enjoyed experimenting with this radio.

what the unofficial mods have done, is amazing. but sure there are limitations. but what it has done, is shown us all what is possible with this radios chip set. so, there is no reason why Quansheng, seeing all this, can't make a real official radio with these features and all the hardware filtering to go with it. Even if it cost twice as much as a k5 does, a k5 with tx/rx 2/70 ssb (or more like 10/6/23cm) out of the box would be a game changer and make them rich, and hams (and cbers) very very happy 😀😀😀

The best feature of this radio for me is mic gain and companding. The FT4 and UV-5R I had before were both way too quiet on TX and getting heard clearly was a real struggle, a bit like trying to cut a gramophone record must have been a century ago. The sound level is great on this. Finally I have a handheld I can use. The firmware mods are just a bonus. I find the spectrum analyser’s ability to listen to a signal as soon as it appears much better than using a scan function.
  • hi and happy christmas i only paid £10 for mine from aliexpress came within 5 days great box great quality radio its a steel for the money got the latest IJV firmware and SSB is amazing got mine as low as 15mhz worldband broadcast stations like china international came in very strong on 17,490mhz by the coast of llandudno love it

OM0ET posted a firmware comparison today (29 Dec 2023), one day after Matt posted this Tech Minds video. It examines reception in SSB-mode on 2 m using three firmwares: IJV v.2.3R5, FAGCI 1.1.2 Lite Test, and EGZUMER v.0.21. In that very limited test, reception was most sensitive with IJV, slightly less sensitive with FAGCI, and least sensitive with EGZUMER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzuDTiOunnY

I only added the custom firmware yesterday, dead easy to do Now I need to learn how to use it properly, it’s quite a complex radio
  • @JonathanAdami
Always on some corner of the internet looking for some weird stuff and when that intro plays I'm like "YASS! that's wassup!" haha thanks for the video (again *10)
  • @IM1deadMONEY
I got the EGZUMER version 0.22. It is amazing, and I love it! I hope this brilliant Polish guy hasn't given up on the uv,-k5, what he does is just the stuff of Legends😊
  • the crux about most china radios is not the receiver but the unwanted tx products. I would not shrink from such a versatile little gadget. Thanks for your video Matt!
  • @saxpert
Meanwhile it's forbidden in Switzerland due to their strict harmonics regulations. The reception is ok, not as good as a lot of people say. But as a cheap fun radio with modding skills it's great. I hope that people don't pollute the air too much with such modded tx radios.

hi matt good video ... im running v20.1 on mine great for RX out of 2m/70cm bands ie airband / marine band i really like it i also set my hri200 up into FM mode and had very nice audio reports on America link with some on east and the west coast NA
  • @MrApolloTom
Worth installing for the spectrum analyser alone (F and 5 to start).
  • @wrongsideof40
Informative video, as always. Thanks! I have a K5(8) and intend to update the firmware when I get a little time. An off-topic question for you: where do I get those whizzy transitions from? Or are they built into an editing package? If so, which one?
  • @ominkan3129
Certainly no GIMMICK. It has its purpose and use. All the improvements with such small internal memory is amazing. The improved AM reception alone is a great addition for a radio that should have had it right out of the box. I don't think the firmware developers are interested in GIMMICKs but improving the features and performance of an impressively priced radio.
