Final Fantasy VIII[b] is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the PlayStation console. Released in 1999, it is the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Set on an unnamed fantasy world with science fiction elements, the game follows a group of young mercenaries, led by Squall Leonhart, as they are drawn into a conflict sparked by Ultimecia, a sorceress from the future who wishes to compress time. During the quest to defeat Ultimecia, Squall struggles with his role as leader and develops a romance with one of his comrades, Rinoa Heartilly.

Development began in 1997, during the English localization of Final Fantasy VII. The game builds on the visual changes brought to the series by Final Fantasy VII, including the use of 3D graphics and pre-rendered backgrounds, while also departing from many Final Fantasy traditions. It is the first Final Fantasy to use realistically proportioned characters consistently, feature a vocal piece as its theme music, and forgo the use of magic points for spellcasting.

Final Fantasy VIII was mostly well received by critics, who praised its originality and visuals while criticizing some of its gameplay elements. It was voted the 22nd-best game of all time in 2006 by readers of the Japanese magazine Famitsu. The game was a commercial success, grossing $151 million in its first day of release in Japan, and more than $50 million during its first 13 weeks in North America, making it the fastest-selling Final Fantasy title until Final Fantasy XIII, a multi-platform release. A Microsoft Windows port followed in 2000, with the addition of the Chocobo World minigame. Final Fantasy VIII was re-released worldwide as a PSOne Classic on the PlayStation Store in 2009, for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, with support for PlayStation Vita in 2012. It was re-released via Steam in 2013. By August 2019, it had sold more than 9.6 million copies worldwide. A remastered version was released for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in September 2019, and iOS, and Android in March 2021.

“Because I am out of nice things to say about this game.” is perhaps the most threatening way you delivered a line yet
  • 23:47 The funny part is, in the original Japanese version, Squall was portrayed as a more socially awkward teenager Who would say phrases like “my bad,” “well, excuse me,” or “sorry.” However, the English version added the “whatever” catchphrase, which makes him seem rude and “emo” or whatever
  • @joxyver
Honestly that alternate ending with the single text of “Rinoa is lost in space… forever.” Is pretty damn brutal and sends chills.

This movie was pretty dope. It's amazing that they made a whole cinematic experience with a unique story-driven plot just to wrap around their card game.

I like how Jared has 888k subs when he releases the Final Fantasy 8 video

The bit about the rules of Triple Triad feels like a Yu-Gi-Oh player trying to explain the current meta to someone who hasn't played since 2004.

Final Fantasy VIII was my first final fantasy when it released. I was 11 and super excited for my first multi-disk game. I remember printing the entire guide from GameFaqs back in the day and getting yelled at by Mom for using all her printer paper. Memories…..

The gun blade is still in my opinion one of the weirdest but coolest looking weapons ever

I think what I like most about this game is the world it takes place in, for the first time the towns felt really alive (and there's a point to be made about FF being about towns). The only weird location is Ultimecia's castle, why does it look like something out of Castlevania? Anyway, I love this game.

“Zell’s favourite snack is packets of silica gel” Ok, I’ll admit that one made me laugh.

Squall is trapped in his own Truman Show with how his friends act around him. It's creepy. It always feels like they know more than they let on.
  • @Sirin2099
Laguna is definitely the best and most memorable character to me in this game.

cards def aren't lost forever. you can always win them back from the person who took it. one of them even requires you to lose another one to a specific npc. then, in disc 3, you can win them all from the card club on the ragnarok if you do their quest. you can mod and re-win all the unique cards infinitely at that point.
  • @gentronseven
Actually the two hot people getting together in high school perfectly describes Squall and Rinoa. That's exactly what it is :D
  • @tomgu2285
Laguna was the best character. I cried honestly at the end because of him. He is a great character.

Jared: "still with me? good! because I am out of nice things to say about this game." Me: checks time of the video "oh boy, not even 10 minutes in..."

FF8 was not only my first Final Fantasy, but my first RPG after “graduating” from Pokemon. After listening to this, I don’t know how the hell I beat this game to a pulp when I was 10 without the internet to help me. But by the end of the game, every character was hitting for 9999 and I had every single card.
