Oranda Goldfish | My Experience Keeping

Published 2021-11-09
Care guide on Oranda Goldfish from my experience keeping. I got my Oranda Goldfish over a year ago now and wanted to provide a care guide while discussing my experience. They are a fish known for having some of the best personality but have different recommendations for care depending on the source. They are a common species to find both at local fish stores or chain stores like Petsmart & Petco. This video goes through my thoughts after a year of keeping one on tank size, growth, aggressiveness, tank mates, water parameters, and other recommendations for someone thinking about getting Oranda or Fancy Goldfish.

If you are interested in additional information about Oranda Goldfish I recommend checking out my website that includes a care sheet at aquariumapi.com/wp/oranda-goldfish-care-carassius-…

Great video! I've kept fancies for 30+ yrs..... and you're absolutely right about the popular misconception that goldies are easy to keep. I currently have a handicapped blue Oranda.....thankfully her much larger tank mates are great w her .Great advice , thank you.

I absolutely loved my goldfish and had kept them for 15 years. Like you had mentioned I always had to baby them because they just need so much care. I found I was doing more "care" then enjoying them and I did rehome my goldfish. I also found at about the 4 year mark their health seemed to take a turn and were always getting sick with something. The only thing I can think of is that because they are so "modified" for 100's of years now their genetics ended up weaked in some way, or just so much inbreeding going on. I traded my goldfish for parrot cichlid fish, yes I know another "modified" fish but I just can't get over their care diffence. Parrot fish for me are by far way more easier than goldfish, almost like they take care of themselves if you know what I mean. I still love goldfish and always will but I will never keep them again.
  • I wish more people would watch this kind of Oranda goldfish videos. Orandas are extremely difficult to keep and have them stay alive. Because of their genetic modifications of breeding they are easily prone to disease. I’ve kept Orandas now for 7 years and learned the hard way that you need to keep on top of water changes and not feeding them too much. Orandas are really cute fish and have funky personalities. But it is so hard to take care of then because of their unique body shapes. I love my huge Orandas and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. But do your research first into what kind of goldfish you want because fancy goldfish are a lot more work than feeder goldfish.

Thx for sharing this video. I had no idea how complex this fish is.
  • Good lesson, do not stock up a lot of orandas or any goldfish especially common GFs (they are huge as kois).. They tend to grow very large and messy. They need atleast 10 gallons each and up or they'll get sick and die eventually. You need 1 gallon per 2 inches of your goldfish.

How many did you keep in how big of a tank? Because I was thinking of getting two in a 36-gallon.
  • In my experience, Fancy Goldfish are like the pug/French bulldog of the fish world. They look cute and are just an amazing personal fish but they come with TONS of health issues. I found if you want a pretty Fancy goldfish without most of the health issues a Shubunkin is the best. The only main issue with em is that they do get pretty large just like comets but the colors are so beautiful just like most Fancy goldfish.
  • Can I house 3 in a 55 gallon? I have 2 large ones, a black and a white. I was wanting to add a panda oranda.

Most of the large goldfish are powerfed..and i heard that power feeding reduce the life expectancy of goldfish..
