Africa Queen: the Bijagos Archipelago

As of the 18th century only few navigators ventured to this vast area of the South Pacific between Chile and French Polynesia. Today we are one of them, on a discovery of the mythical islands made famous by South Seas adventurers. The cruise begins in Valparaiso, the Chilean port once a pit stop for Cape Horners, a charming town on a hill covered with wooden houses reached by elevators from another time period. After two weeks, the Austral reaches Robinson Crusoe Island, where long ago a shipwreck on its deserted shores inspired Daniel Defoe to write his famous novel. Then onto Easter Island (Rapa Nui in Polynesian) with its mysterious giant statues, the Moais, and Pitcairn Island, where the mutinous of the Bounty found refuge after leaving Tahiti -- where our voyage comes to an end.

Stopover will take you on prodigious trips across the most marvelous oceans and rivers of the world. Travel with us as we explore not just the waters of the world, but also the mythical cruise ships, legendary liners, magnificent sailboats and fascinating traditional vessels that take us from place to place.

Take a behind the scenes peek into the lives of liner crew members and discover the pleasures of a life spent at sea.

Africa, the origin and richness of all cultures

They are not a spectator attraction, how crazy is it to have people going to visit like they are visiting an exhibit. What if they took a tour of your neighbourhood with a guide taking pictures of your kids, your house, how you live, following you to work and everything you do? There is nothing wrong with sharing world culture, but it should not be exploitive.

This is my country, is where I'm from. I'm very proud of our long lasting tradition & culture which we preserve even after colonialism. I live in England and I do my best to teach my children my traditional tribe practice because is fundamental for them to know their origin and backgrounds. respect to my African ancestral and lots of love to my African people wherever you live or born. Respect.
  • I enjoy video like this because these people still do things the old way....... That is the best way and the best food.
  • How simple their life is but they are contented and happy. No greediness. Their life is center on communal living.
  • although I had no idea about these people and thier culture ..it bothered me to see european visitors again asking these people to dance and climb trees..nothing will ever change with these people ..

Amazing people, amazing life- the story from your video love it.
  • I have to check this out on my next visit to Senegal. I was in the Façados Islands, in the Bight of Benin, southern Nigeria-Cameroon it has been decimated with oil spills by Shell and Exxon-mobil oil companies. These companies have committed serious atrocities to the ecology of that once pristine mangrove forest. Sinful

I am so glad unesco got involved in this area now it can remain vibrant and sustainable. the people are so rich in history and culture, no need for material things and not caught up in who is the richest man in town. they are rich and wealthy in how they live their lives so awesome

I come here after I saw this story from my iNews Tv. It's a great video !
  • Couple hundreds years ago the European Setller put their feet into this pretty land and until now it is still happpy but the economic left behind by them and existing and exploiting systematic linear economic put there by them is still hurting every aspect of the development of this great nation. One thing everyone should remember Africa is a place where Happiness is existing even with poverty still dominating. We African are proud of everything natural that God has given and we will never be ashamed of anything we have.

Tourism brings in curiosity to the locals, they will also be introduced slowly with western culture influence and this will affect the future generations of these beautiful peoples of Bissago.
  • such unspoiled beauty.....amazing how these people can live without any of the trappings of so-called modern society...and they are so happy...western people can learn a lot from these happy people.....
