Extortion rackets have held businesses in Cape Town’s CBD to ransom for years. Beerhouse in Long Street is closing its doors after refusing to pay protection fees. "We cannot have a situation where anybody can prosper and get ahead if these kinds of extortion rackets are going to do what they do. That must end and I'm deeply committed to making that end with whatever tools we have. We do need SAPS to work with us and accept our help." Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith tells #Newzroom405's Michelle Craig.

JP Smith, get these big guys, and stop imprisoning drug users. Stop putting people in prison, who are victims of the much bigger problem. JP Smith, we are watching.

  • Just like kidnapping in our country it started out small and no one took it seriously, if this is not resolved it's almost a guarantee that extortion will spread all over the country to even the biggest corporations and companies in especially the likes of Jhb etc..

They cant operate. Cape Town is a great city, but we really need to get a hand on this extortion thing.
  • Look how clean the inner city of Cape Town is. Something you'll never see in Johannesburg or Durban. ANC has destroyed this country to almost beyond repair.

Thank God Bheki Cele (who was nothing but a roadblock and a pothole) is gone. FYI don't play with Cape Town Law Enforcement as they are young, fit, serious and good at what they do. If you pulled over and say the word bribe you'll be arrested before you get to the second B. I've cursed them, but they've definitely earned my respect. 👍🇿🇦

In our local informal settlement, the Somalian cafes pay the bribe/extortion AND the shebeens, who are allised to trade legally - beer, have ALL been approached by extortionists- R5000 up front and R2000 monthly. Heartbreaking that an old lady ,who sold sweets, was approached(invaded) and they realized she couldn't agree to pay, they removed ALL her furniture😮
