Ep:87 THE TRUTH ABOUT OXALATES! Function, dysfunction, damage. - by Robert Cywes

Sorting out assumptions associations and causality.
It's tough to comprehend. Oxalates ARE definitely a problem. BUT NOT OXALATES WE CONSUME, OXALATES WE PRODUCE ON A CARB- PROTEIN RICH DIET LOW IN FAT. Harmful oxalates are produced internally not consumed in our food

  • Isn’t it amazing that all the problems blamed on meat and saturated fat, go away when all you eat is meat and saturated fat!

After three years of keto I developed a 6 mm kidney stone and then gallstones, analyzed to be from oxalates. I was eating tons and tons of almonds and spinach and other high oxalate foods on keto. My urologist told me that with the advent of almond milk they started seeing more and more kidney stones. BTW, kidney stone pain is on a level that I didn’t even know could exist.

No, my stones did not go away with fat adapted ketosis... I had to get rid of all plants.
  • @SimoneSilver1986
I was eating what most people would consider a healthy diet, but it was high in oxalates. Going on a very low oxalate diet has cured my lifelong joint and foot pain. If I eat spinach today that pain will be right back tomorrow.

The Doc’s use of the dramatic pause is Level Expert

Dr. Cywes didn't die from drinking his coffee because coffee is low in oxalates (not high, as he stated).
  • I think you’re wrong, I’ve always had a good diet, but I have chronic back pain from a car accident. I stopped eating foods with oxalates and went carnivore for two months and the pain decreased by 90%

would love to see an interview with this doctor and Sally K Norton I bet the truth is somewhere in the middle

After 3 years on a strict KETO lifestyle with ample green leafy vegetables, I passed a kidney stone in early 2021 that caused the most painful experience in my life. After that experience, I significantly reduced my consumption of high oxalate foods. I have not had any additional kidney stone issues. That is my n=1 experience.

Not coffee. Most of the foods heavy with oxalate were not traditionally eaten or were processed somehow ( soaking, fermenting, sprouting). This information, oxalate poisoning, is saving my life!! It takes time for the oxalate to accumulate to dangerous levels. We have forgotten about the toxicity in plants, our ancestors knew and took great pains to process the toxins out of plants. It took decades for my oxalate level to begin harming me. I had a very high level of oxalate in my diet.

I used to suffer terrible chronic gout… And even the first year of doing the keto diet I would get flares… However I can say with confidence that the good doctor is correct. Almost three years into being fat adapted and I can say with confidence I cured my gout. If you suffered from gout like I did chronically… Then you know that statement is life changing statement.

I hate vegetables so I've never even worried about oxalates.
  • @Straightdeal
Tip of the day: Eat a handful of walnuts with a slab of cheddar cheese. The calcium in the cheese will bind with the oxalates in the walnuts and exit the system. 😄
  • Yes I took advise like this from someone else and six months later ended up with oxalate poisoning. The vast majority of people do not have the oxalate-degrading bacteria in there gut and if you have been given antibiotics then you certainly don't have it. Telling people to be completely ignorant of the issue doesn't help anyone.

This makes SO much more sense to me, and i have experienced the awful effects! I have had crippling anxiety my entire life. I've had digestive issues and interstitial cystitis most of my life as well. I also developed rheumatoid arthritis and severe lymphatic swelling 5 years ago. I started eating low carb most of the time about 10 years ago with good results with my digestion, but continued to have severe anxiety and panic. So last summer I went full carnivore for 4 months, which meant I eliminated oxalate as well. For the first time, I was panic free. I also saw the largest reduction in the RA that I have so far. Then I started a more Ray Peat approach, keeping oxalate rich foods out but incorporating natural sugar and fruit. My RA is now worse than ever. I am still anxiety free, but I think my leaky gut just couldn't handle all the spinach\chocolate and other oxalate rich foods I used to eat. I am going back to keto and can't wait to be pain free again! Thanks for sharing!!
  • @timothy790110
Tell that to my calcium oxalat kidney stones. Id rather stay away from them than go through that pain again, thank you very much.
  • @MamaVee50
Thank you for all you do to re-educate us about human nutrition. I always remember from my critical thinking class in college that “correlation is not causation.”
  • I love everything you teach to us about being healthier! I count my lucky stars that I got introduced to you! Andrew Berger told me about you and I'm also a type 1 diabetic! I'm implementing everything you teach!! It's just the beginning for me but I'm totally onboard!! Thank you for helping all of us live a healthier and better life. . . . .all the best to you and your family. . . .
  • @robbiekeith3528
100 percent correct. Thank you I eat tons of salads everyday and have 0 health issues from oxalate. I'm 64 run marathons. Slim. No kidney stones. People are hysterical about fictitious claims about eating vegetables. Total hysteria. You can't argue with them that they are wrong
  • @kathleenberch
Thank you thank you thank you! Amazing words. Spot on! I am trying my hardest to understand all this information and apply to the best of my ability to improve my health. So much info out there. If you're an amateur like me well then a person can get confused and mislead. But all your lectures are inspiring, brutally honest and eye opening. I had also gotten afraid of the oxalate issue.. and surely I don't know what I'm doing. But I persisted in trying to learn more things and make better decisions. Your lectures have helped me immensely. I've turned carnivore now for 7 weeks. It's going very, very well. My energy, focus, mood are all elevated. I'm a 63 yr old female. Two meals a day, I don't need more and I'm never hungry only around meal time. I've lost a lot of weight now, and it continues to drop.. carb/sugar addiction really packed some pounds on me. I'm so grateful that they fall off effortlessly and I don't have to starve myself to death with minimizing diets. Anyway, I'm a big fan of yours. Don't ever change! 👌💞 Keep those videos coming!
